Wests Campbelltown CEO enters debate on crowds

I thought that was pretty poor form via the Leagues club rep.

It shouldn't be a Leichardt vs Campbelltown thing. I'm from the Balmain side and I would happily have the team play at Campbelltown every game if that was the best thing for the club.

I don't think Meyer should be discussing such an important issue on Twitter, so thumbs down to him.

However the Campbelltown CEO obviously thinks that when they play a Sydney team, the opposition team are going to bring 10,000 fans to support the 6k locals that show up.

He must have a short memory too - they got 2 games against Sydney teams last year including 9k against Penrith on a sunny March Sunday.

Excuses, excuses.

A whorde of old Magpie bogans had Mayer bailed up as he exited the ground trying to blame him for being a "Manly boy" and wanting to ruin Wests.

There is zero excuse for last nights crowd. It was worse then pathetic in number. I enjoyed the game and the little atmosphere generated but it has gotten to the point at CSS where all the mobile coffee vendors have stopped coming for lack of return on investment

This is a concern isn't it. I love the delusional peeps who are blaming Mayer or the club for the turnout.

Some food for thought.

2010-2013 at Cambo- 8 Sydney opponents 8 interstate opponents

2010-2013 at LO - 5 Sydney opponents 11 interstate oponents

Regardless, this is a rubbish excuse and it shouldn't matter who the opponent is.

The biggest crowd ever at Cambo is against the Cowboys in 2005.

Mayer saying that they will stop playing games there is rubbish. You can't abandon the area, and it ultimately needs to be seen to be the future for the club.

They are going to have to find a way to re engage the area. Maybe hand out thousands of free tickets to get the locals back into the habit of attending the games again or something?

Where does the money come from ? I think we just have to win games consistently year on year which is really hard and not play too many games at our suburban grounds.

When the crowd number came up at the game pretty much everyone around us had the same reaction.... pathetic. Felt bad for the boys who put in such a great effort on the field.

whats even worse is the new security controlled car park at campbelltown stadium holds 1000 cars, we were at the back of it and took a paltry 10 minutes to get out back onto the road. With that ease of access and a train station right next door too there is no good excuse for any fan to have not gone.

Do you ever go to games yourself?

It will be a huge mistake to play all the games in that concrete canyon in my view.

I don't go much at all now however I do go to ANZ and it isn't as bad as what is made out. Sometimes you miss stuff at Leichhardt because on the hill people jump up and get in the way. At ANZ you get a good view - the problem is it is a big stadium and not as close to the ground as it should be.

It also comes down to money. ANZ doesn't cost the club money - we make money. Plus it would give us one home ground. The multiple grounds doesn't seem to be working as per the crowd last night. I don't think you can have less games at Campbelltown than at Leichhardt because that area is supposedly the growth area.

I prefer going to LO myself, however I guess it's personal opinion.

Don't forget with the current set up, ANZ only gets the games against the other tenants, so this gives opportunities for cross promotions with Souths, Parra fans to get them to the games (for free essentially as part of their memberships).

This won't work with the out of towners, and I don't think ANZ would get better crowds against these teams. We don't know yet because they never had to play there before.

If they can get a break with the weather, there will be 20K at LO against the Titans. Couldn't imagine that at ANZ.

I just read Mayer's comments and he makes some good points. They lose money playing at Campbelltown because of the poor support. Is it really worth playing there ?

As for LO vs ANZ - the thing is 20k at LO mightn't mean a loss however playing at ANZ guarantees a profit.

I'm also not a fan of playing less at Campbelltown compared to LO. I just think that will piss fans from the Wests side off more.

The best option is for more people to go to Campbelltown and ideally fans from that area because that is meant to be the growth area and we have lots of juniors from that area playing in our team.

At the moment ANZ get to cherry pick the best games.

How do we know how they value the games against the interstate teams? They may not pay anty extra for these games.

I can't cop that they don't make any money out if a good crowd at LO either.

Also, I don't see why people who want to go to LO games should be penalised because people don't show up at Cambo games. That's crazy.

They take the games against their other tenants. It makes perfect sense, reciprocal tickets for members etc.

I hate ANZ but it is truly a necessary evil

It makes sense, but still leave us a couple of games at LO ( and I still support Cambo as well)

At least in the short term.

Im with you BR , last week I went and sat in the rain at LO , if it was at ANZ even tho I would have been nice and dry I wouldnt have went . LO is a fortress and as long as the players and the fans want it well it should stay for as long as possible.

Maybe the NRL had alienated the fans.
Shit games, Night games against out of state teams.
If you gave them a blockbuster on a Sunday afternoon would it be different?

Maybe can can you bet a clubs financial security on what is becoming an endemically inconsistent attendance?

This is the issue isn't it. If you are running the club what is the best thing for the club which obviously includes the fans from the Southwest.
