I came across this article today, and considering that tradition is one of QLD's more important assets I am amazed at the decision. And more to the point, the decision not to rule out sponsorship on the green and gold is an absolute disgrace.
Queensland has sold the front of its State of Origin jersey to AAMI in a deal believed to be worth $1 million over three years. In a break with tradition, the Queensland Rugby League has revealed that the front of its jumper is no longer sacrosanct, leaving the Australian and New South Wales jerseys as the only ones left with no sponsorship. "Next year the jersey will be redesigned and the AAMI name may blend in more," QRL Managing Director Ross Livermore told The Courier-Mail. "We asked the Australian Rugby League if we could have a sponsor's name on the jersey after Philips had a strong presence on the Test jumper last year." And while the Australian jumper remains free of advertising at this stage, apart from when Phillips had a presence as part of the logo, Australian Rugby League Chief Executive Geoff Carr doesnât rule out the possibility a sponsor will be incorporated in future.
