I think it is certainly a question worth considering. Is an NRL Coach supposed to develop a player individually or manage the team as a whole??

By the time a player reaches first grade, you would suspect that they shouldn't need to work on the basics of Rugby League ie passing or tackling.Would it be fair to say that game plans and team structure would be more the focus of an NRL Coach??

Looking at our own Coach, where have we improved on last season?? Has there been a player who has really come on this year due to Rapers Coaching?? Has there been a player who has really fallen away??

I am generally interested in what others would see as the Coaches role at this elite level.

Is it the job of the lower grade Coaches to develop these footballers to first grade standard?? Does our Coach have any say in who we sign??

I know there are a lot of questions, but I would like to know what you all think.

Can someone also inform us what is the role of a 'coaching director' is?

Also what is the role of a blues state of origin coach?

The role of the coach, IMO, is to provide the team with leadership, guidance and critisism. On top of that the coach's most significant aim is to keep every single player happy. If the players are all happy then the job becomes so much easier.

Importantly, the coach must have a good relationship with the director's of the club as well. Something SR's predecessor lacked which led to the disaster that was 2003.

To answer the question I think you are answering though Fiz, I would say that teaching players the fundamentals of the game fall back to the assistant coach or the Jersey Flegg coach. These two should have more time for such instruction and should be selected with this in mind.

definitely the coach at nrl level should be focusing on gameplan, strategy, combinations, psychology, recruitment, etc ie developing the team / club as opposed to training basic skills.

no doubt the 'head' coach will identify areas of play / skills that require work and oversee this, but the mechanics of such traing should primarily fall to the club's support staff - trainers, conditioners, junior coaches, skill specialists, etc

director of football acts as a mentor to the coach in an advisory role, identifying and securing recruitment targets and generally taking an overall view of the football teams development from a senior club level.

To get a clear idea of skills coaches as opposed to head coach you need look no further than the NFL. They have so many coaches they even have one for the water boy.

Despite all the things that have been said here, the ONLY role for the NRL coach is to WIN games. Otherwise he gets sacked.

Position on the table.

Sullivan is no longer rubbish.

We can score points.

We can offload.

We don't get penalised into the turf.

Do I need to go on?

I also think there are some more far more glaring player improvements under Raper, Isemonger, BIckerstaff, Hilder, Gallen, Stevens.

I think the NRL coaching role is all about MOTIVATION and RESPECT. Coaches who earn the latter from their charges through their day to day tasks as head coach, ie, selections, tactics, responding to and fixing problems, are the good coaches.

Strategist, motivator and psychologist. The big picture stuff. THe skills stuff he delegates to specialist skills coaches.
I see the improvements in terms of intelligent strategies, the most noticeable examples I've seen were against Bulldogs last week and Brisbane. Stuart knows the potential of his players and he works with the material he's got, in contrast to Anderson who imposed a style without considering the material he had to work with.

maybe it's because Stuey has asked him to get an extra 3 metres every time he runs it up. unlike Ando telling him to hit the ground and then play the ball quickly

It sounds to me like our esteemed friend Fizman is on the prowl for an NRL coaching position.
Mate perhaps if one has aspirations of becoming a professional coach one must bide their time as a junior coach in the lower grades first.
Crikey here's a thought... with all the cross code swapping ie Sailor, Rogers, Tuquiri etc, perhaps coaching a junior union team might just be the ticket for an NRL spot!!!
