2. Gilchrist
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Symonds
6. Hussey
7. White
8. Lee
9. Hogg/Johnson (depending on pitch)
10. Bracken

Pretty much agreed, except they won't take a extra keeper. Hussey will be the reserve keeper they take on tour.

1. Watson
2. Gilchrist
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Symonds
6. Hussey
7. White
8. Lee
9. Johnson
10. Bracken
11. McGrath

12. Hogg
13. Hillfenhaus
14. Hayden
15. Tait

That's pretty much the side i'd have, and if it looked a turning wicket i'd swap Hogg for Johnson.

Yes, and I considered Jaques for the extra batsman but decided Hayden only becuase of his experience. There will not be a turning wicket in the Windies and I have been impressed with Michael Clarke's spinners anyway.

yeah but by taking Hogg you have all bases covered just in case. Hayden and Jaques would be a toss up but it looks like Hayden has got as long as he likes to cement his spot.

i'm not sold on watson as an opener, i really fail to see what he has done to earn that spot. in 50 odd games he has a highest score of 79 and in 37 domestic one dayers he averages 29! saying that i would still have him in my team.

Gilchrist
Clarke ( has opened well in limited chances)
Ponting
Marcus north/adam voges/mark cosgrove ( i really cant split them)
Symonds
Hussey
white
watson
Lee
Bracken
Mcgrath

personally I think if watson is in the team there is no need for four specialist bowlers. watson and the 3 pace bowlers give you 40 overs , clarke , symonds and white split the rest.

if the need is there for four specialist pace bowlers i'd have a specialist batsmen in front of watson , one of cosgrove , north or voges.

As hard as it is to agree with you, you are pretty spot on. It will be a nospam46-up between Johnson & Hogg, & Haydos & Watson, but the rest is a given.

I said in a earlier thread i would prefer Clarke to open instead of bringing back a 35 year old like Hayden. it will be interesting to see what happens when Watson regains his fitness.

I agree that Michael Clarke would be best suited to opening in one day internationals as he`s not an overly big hitter of the ball, but he`s the type of player who likes to stay in for long periods and is very capable of making big scores at a high strike rate.

My side for the World Cup
1- Adam Gilchrist
2- Michael Clarke
3- Ricky Ponting
4- Andrew Symonds (give him some time at the crease and a chance to launch his innings)
5- Mike Hussey (i reckon 6 is a touch too low for him, 5 is about perfect)
6- David Hussey or Adam Voges (both of these can score at a rapid rate and also bat sensibly in a crisis)
7- Shane Watson (he and White could be swapped in the order, depending on circumstances)
8- Cameron White (i`d often move him up the order, depending on circumstances)
9- Brett Lee
10- Stuart Clark
11- Mitchell Johnson
12- Glen McGrath
(one to be 12th man)

13- Adam Voges or David Hussey
14- Brad Hogg or possibly Brad Haddin (if we need a back up keeper?)
15- Ben Hilfenaus or Shaun Tait (very close decision, both deserve to go)

*** With such a powerfull batting line up, there would also be the option of playing Cameron White, Andrew Symonds or possibly David Hussey or Adam Voges as Gilly`s opening partner and letting them blast away early on to try and set up a huge score. Also an option if chasing a large score ??? In saying this, i reckon Michael Clarke is capable of scoring at well over a 100% strike rate as an opener if need be.

Brillant side

Agree with selecting David Hussey and Vogues, particularly Hussey
Hope he gets picked should Hayden not go well.

The anchor man opener is long gone. Also the hussey brothers and Watson could stabalise the innings should we lose 3-4 early wickets and still score at a decent rate. Then you got Lee, White, even Stuart Clark to do some power hitting at the end.

My only one concern with that squad is Stuart Clark, I dont think he has taken to ODI just yet

They won`t drop Hayden now and he`ll more than likely do a decent enough job for us, but as you said, he plays more the role of an anchorman which isn`t really needed these days. This current Aussie side has the ability to regularly be 100+ after 10 overs only having lost 1 or 2 wickets maximum. That would set us up for 300+ scores almost every time we play, meaning we`d be almost unbeatable at the upcoming World Cup.

1-Phil Jaques
2-Adam Gilchrist (wk)
3-Ricky Ponting (c)
4-Shane Watson
5-Michael Clarke
6-Michael Hussey
7-Andrew Symonds
8-Cameron White
9-Brett Lee
10-Nathan Bracken
11-Ben Hilfenhaus

12-Brad Hogg

I just personally love batting depth, and f**k does that side have it. White is an ok OD bowler, and Symmo and Clarke are more than capable spinners anyways. Lee, Bracken, Hilfenhaus, Watson, Symonds, Clarke, and White is a fair attack, and it still leaves us with batting down to 9....

Oh. And yes I did omit McGrath...look, he is a great man and a great bowler but he has been out of sorts at the moment. I'd rotate him and Hilfy through that last bowling spot, see who did the best job...

Watson has opened for a couple of games, I cant believe people are picking him to open in the WC, but I do think Hayden should be replaced.

Watching both Gilly and Hayden facing Bond yesterday, there was a big difference in ability. Gilly was putting Bond away while Hayden was playing and missing. We are gonna face alot of bowlers in the WC that are as good as, or better then Bond.

Jaques looks to be the logical replacement, although he can be hot and cold, but thats the way he plays.

As much as it pains me, I agree Twiz. But I would open with Clarke for the rest of the summer. See how he goes there first! Watson can open or easily bat 4!
