The most telling stat was that our starting back-row only made a combined 149 metres compared to the Bulldogs 273 metres!!!
The issue remains that our back-row lacks penetration and struggles for quality running metres!!
The two back-rowers off the bench (Halatau & Fulton) made 131 metres - indicating they did make a greater impact than the starters - which compares favourably with Maitua and Brideson's combined 105!!
This in itself is a fair indication of why Heigho has been named this week - especially given his consistently stellar form in Premier League!!
Our three quarters also struggled for metres compared to their Canterbury counterparts - with both dogs centres and one winger (Lolesi) all making over 100 metres in attack - Fitzy was our only three-quarter encroaching on the 100 metre mark with 92 against his name!!
While as a team we made just 57 metres less than the dogs - we made up for our deficiencies in the above areas with Hodgo's brilliant 218 metres and Mearsy's 91 metres off the bench (compared to 104 metres for Patten and just 4 metres for Corey Hughes)!
The simple conclusion to be drawn - without Hodgo we'd be f**ked!!!
Meanwhile in defence there has been alot of criticism of Fitzy - but in comparison to Elford he missed just one tackle to Shane's 3 and made 30 tackles compared to Shane's 15!!! That is a pretty damning statistic for the knockers and indicates Fitzy to be twice the defender (both in work-rate and effectiveness) that Elford is!!!
Hodgo's defence has been heavily praised - but against Canterbury he made 0 tackles and missed 2!!! Not overly flash!!
But in defence as a team we missed 6 tackles less than the dogs - while making an extra 28 tackles - which is an excellent overall effort!!
For the dogs Anasta had a shocker in defence making just 5 tackles and missing 2 to again prove he is the most over-rated 5/8th in the game!!
(In comparison Benji made 22 tackles and missed just 1 - to prove he is a player of exceptional maturity)!!
Many times the stats don't tell the real story - but I believe all of these I've listed above provide an accurate reflection of how the game panned out!
