What the stats tell us....

The most telling stat was that our starting back-row only made a combined 149 metres compared to the Bulldogs 273 metres!!!

The issue remains that our back-row lacks penetration and struggles for quality running metres!!

The two back-rowers off the bench (Halatau & Fulton) made 131 metres - indicating they did make a greater impact than the starters - which compares favourably with Maitua and Brideson's combined 105!!

This in itself is a fair indication of why Heigho has been named this week - especially given his consistently stellar form in Premier League!!

Our three quarters also struggled for metres compared to their Canterbury counterparts - with both dogs centres and one winger (Lolesi) all making over 100 metres in attack - Fitzy was our only three-quarter encroaching on the 100 metre mark with 92 against his name!!

While as a team we made just 57 metres less than the dogs - we made up for our deficiencies in the above areas with Hodgo's brilliant 218 metres and Mearsy's 91 metres off the bench (compared to 104 metres for Patten and just 4 metres for Corey Hughes)!

The simple conclusion to be drawn - without Hodgo we'd be f**ked!!!

Meanwhile in defence there has been alot of criticism of Fitzy - but in comparison to Elford he missed just one tackle to Shane's 3 and made 30 tackles compared to Shane's 15!!! That is a pretty damning statistic for the knockers and indicates Fitzy to be twice the defender (both in work-rate and effectiveness) that Elford is!!!

Hodgo's defence has been heavily praised - but against Canterbury he made 0 tackles and missed 2!!! Not overly flash!!

But in defence as a team we missed 6 tackles less than the dogs - while making an extra 28 tackles - which is an excellent overall effort!!

For the dogs Anasta had a shocker in defence making just 5 tackles and missing 2 to again prove he is the most over-rated 5/8th in the game!!

(In comparison Benji made 22 tackles and missed just 1 - to prove he is a player of exceptional maturity)!!

Many times the stats don't tell the real story - but I believe all of these I've listed above provide an accurate reflection of how the game panned out!

Stats....ahhhh I love it.Stats also showed us that Buddha was the best one on one defender at the club in 2003.

I find it amusing that if you do two times the tackling someone else does, you come to the conlcusion that they are twice as good?????One of yer best.

On Fitzy,I do admit that his defense has impoved in regards to him missing tackles which is great. What the stats dont show is how many metres players make while Fitzy is tackling them.He still is a grabber and they make plenty of territory while he is hanging onto them.

Ahhhh stats......like the bible, you can pick a bit of it you like and use it as gospel......

good stuff in analyzing the stats for everyone, makes for some interesting reading, but i agree 100% with you in the fact that we would be rooted without hodgo!

simon - I stated that the stats often do not represent the true picture - but I do not believe this is the case here!!!

The fact is 3 misses when 18 are attempted (by Elford) - compared to 1 miss in 31 (by Fitzy) makes itself clear regarding tackkle effectiveness!!! The percentages for that game have Fitzy at 96.7% effective and Shane at 83.3%!!!

I just want to make it clear that some of the insinuations in this forum are baseless!!

The attack might target Fitzy in defence - but he does his job!!!

Not to mention the 92 metres in attack he made compared to Elford's 52 (even Covell made 69 and Moodie over 70)!!!

The fact is the kid can play!!!

I rate both players I must add - but Fitzy shows more heart than Elford - but still cops a caning from the loyal Tigers supporters!

And the minute stats prove the knockers presumptions wrong - you bag them (despite their value as a coaching tool)!!!

You've got f**king nothing!!!!

I think most of the criticism for Fitzy's defence was after the Manly game when he was on the wing.
Simons right,....he is a grabber, but when he wants to he can pull off good tackles as the stats are showing...he's improving, got a good eye, spots the smallest gap and with his pace off the mark hes exploiting it.

He's doing well. I was worried with him defending in the centres, especially next to Benji. I still have some concern - especially if someone goes for a barge over. He has definately improved. He's going great in attack and he's good for a line break a game. I think he needs to work on getting on the outside of his other man - he tends to carve up from dummy half, but do nothing in backline plays.

Yeah....the last few games he's been going well. That still doesnt change the fact that in the past he's had shockers.....usually at 5/8 where its most noticeable as well. Funny thing....he only gets bagged when he plays poorly.

!

Yes some of those stats are fairly alarming

Oneill 11 hit ups for 51 metres is less than 5 meters per hit up!!

In Sattlers case he is the second best offloader in the comp, and in the top 5 tacklers, and stats dont count experience and quality leadership, so to say he lacks impact is wrong.

Dene and Liam stats are impressive and they add much needed LEG SPEED and if Oneill and Galea dont improve im sure like graham they will be slowly phased out before the years end.

Whilst i`d prefer Bronson Harrison,Dean Collis or both of them in the centres,no one could be unhappy about how Fitzy and Elford have been going. One very important fact about Fitzy is that you definately can`t question his involvement and he`s smarter than most centres,he reads a game real well.As far as Elford goes,I feel he`s improving with every game at his new club and the main reason he doesn`t make as many tackles as his centre partners is the fact that he`s always in the face of his opponent. This is made evident by the fact that he`s leading the comp in intercepts!
As far as the second rowers getting statistically outplayed by their opponents, this has happened every week and although it may only be a statistic,I see it as a big problem. As we do have a smallish pack at best, the fact our starting second rowers aren`t making their share of metres does put undue pressure on our front rowers!MON is a great club stalwart,I realise he does a lot of talking on the field and is a great gee-up man for our younger players, but I ask the question, does that compensate for the fact that players eg. Heighnington,Halatau,Fulton,Lima and possibly Viane or De Gois are statistically better?

You'll find Wilson was the one missing those tackles. He was subsequently dropped a week or two later.
