I cant recall the dragons kicking the ball into touch or over the dead ball line to slow the play down. All of the kicks were in play apart from Hayne's first kick went into touch on the full, both teams never got a 20 metre restart or scrum from the kick going out.

Which shows the dragons had another tactic which was surprising with players backing up, by keeping the ball in play

Clearly not in the spirit of the game.

Seriously though I did find that a bit odd, would have thought it would be worthwhile to give the forwards a bit of a rest.

I guess that gives the opposition time for a breather as well which worked out for us when they were looking pretty shot in the second half.

It was evident we had them on the ropes after 30 minutes. No chance in hell you'd want to give them a breather. Our fitness was better than theirs, you don't level the playing field just to give yourself a little breather.

I'm surprised Parra didn't use this tactic though, but they don't exactly have the smartest halves going around I guess.

Good point , but i guess with the players backing up for the dragons the eels thought the dragons would tire but they didnt.

Parramatta and the media were spewing that we kicked away from Hayne in round 1. What will they come up with this time after we kicked numerous straight down his throat and he was still ineffective? One day our Dragons will get the recognition that they deserve. Until then, the media can suck it up.

Speaking of kicking

At about the 5th - 6th minute of the 1st half we kicked the ball down field at the end of the set. Burt ran back & fell on the ball & basically waited for the Dragons chasers to make the tackle. He appeared to have enough time to get on his feet & take the hit. Of course if he did, being so close to the touch line he ran the risk of being dragged out.

This seems to occur on a regular basis where players go to ground to protect themselves from the tackle.

Isn’t it a penalty to surrender before a tackle is made?

Probably. But it's also probably a penalty for not feeding the ball straight into a scrum. It all depends on how the refs are instructed to interpret the rules. Countless times we've seen the player lay on the ground with a defender standing over, and one of two things happen: 1) The player on the ground eventually tries to run & is tackled, or 2) the defender eventually places a hand on him. Can't recall ever seeing a penalty for a voluntary tackle.
