What wins games?

With coutless discussions on CA and the board, I wanted to ask the question. What wins games?

In my opinion, it's a few items, in this order.

1) A solid relationship between board and coach and his staff
2) The coach having trust and respect from players
3) Players who believe in themselves

You can look at styles of play, mind numbing statistics, referees, media influence, club cash flow and profit, TV coverage the list goes on.

Teams win when they are focused on winning, and what's happening at the sharks distracts everyone.

I think you've got the order backwards and you've left out the most important thing.

The second-most important thing is that the players believe in themselves. If a player believes in himself, then sometimes he may sincerely disagree with the coach and say so.

A good coach will work through the different points of view to get the best from what the players have to offer. This strengthens the TEAM - which is the most important thing of all.

It's a TEAM game.

What we saw on Sunday was a really cohesive TEAM of quite good players beat a fairly cohesive TEAM of star players. The single, constant part of Penrith's game plan was "Work Together. Support each other".

Our current working game plan is: "Work for the coach. Support the Coach".

Item three is most important. However the players rely on the coach first and foremost (Item 2) Luckily we still have this.

Hopefully item 1 will sort itself out sooner rather than later, so we can all look forward to the lads showing us a fair bit of Item 3.

Having played a fair bit of sport at high levels in the past, I think the important stuff is:

1. More important than anything else is teamwork. The players have to believe in each other and be willing to do anything for each other.

2. Skill levels. Second only to teamwork, because quite simply you still have to have the skill to be able to compete with the rest.

3. A good coach. A good coach knows his players inside out and knows what they can and can't do, then builds his game plan around what he has to work with. The players don't necessarily have to be on a great level personally with the coach, as long as there is a mutual respect.

I think we failed so dismally because we were lacking in areas 2 and 3. 2, because quite simply, our outside backs had been ravaged. 3 because the coach had a pre set game plan and tried to coach his players into it, rather than the other way around. Flexibility is the key, and it took until we were out of the finals race for Anderson to show any, and because of this, we lost Dean Treister and Nick Graham along the way.

Why have the Broncos been so successful over time? Not because Wayne Bennett has found a winning formula and stuck with it, but because he's always known his players inside out and known how to craft a game plan that suits their abilities.

El Garbo:

I would say that both John Lang and Ricky Stuart defeinitely coach in that fashion. Bellamy? Hagan? Murray? They're in the same mold.

My impression of modern coaching technique is in general:

1. Gather together a reasonably stable (ie stable except for injuries) group of guys.
2. Develop, encourage, nurture a really strong team spirit
3. Analyse each player's special talents and develop a style of play, a game plan, that makes best use of those talents
4. Over time and with experience, fine-tune the team by letting go of those who don't fit (either by temperament or skill-set) and adding those who can add to what is there.

John Lang left Cronulla with 1, 2 & 3 well-advanced. When Chris Anderson was announced as our new coach I thought that he would take what we had and improve upon it. Instead he demolished what was there and then claimed the need to re-build.

Whoever is our coach in years to come we are now, October 11 2003, as far from the premiership as we have ever been.
