What year did Rugby League begin?

What year did rugby league first get created? And when was it first brought to Australia?

I know that the NSWRL started in 1908, but im not sure when the actual sport began. Anyone know?

1895 in Huddersfield.

Essentially, the first League games played here were in fact in 1908.
We adopted the rules of the Northern Union - the 'League' comp in England - I guess it's a possibily that the breakway League here could've played Union.

Northern Union rules were used from the outset in Australia 1908, In Englabd the Break away occured in 1895 using the Union rules it wasn't until about 1906 or so that the teams were reduced to 13 players.

Cheers guys, I always got confused, in the back of my mind I always think 1908 straight away.

I do remember hearing somewhere that it began in Wales though, is there any truth to that?

No truth at all, If you ever travel to Yorkshire Northern England county it is almost a duty as a RL fan to go to Huddersfield and have a pint at the George.
