Agreed with the above. The usarl is only just taking over. Give them 3 years and they'll be ready for a cross border national comp.
what a waste of money. Canada has almost zero juniors. If they were entering SL it would be different.
But I think the vehicle for int'l development is a mix between domestic development and accessing better comps ie. ireland & scotland in league 1, toulouse in SL, italy in Elite 1, Spain in Elite 2, Belgium playing Paris clubs, fiji in nsw cup, cook islands in nz champs etc.
Not all of these examples are viable, but some are and they should be strived for. Canada is over reaching imo

Western Reds had to pay for everybody to travel to Perth. They couldn't sustain it.

There more to it than just the stadium, rfl wants cash for them coming in. They states years ago they could use stadium toulouse rugby use and colombiers but there is the leasing issue i would imagine.

Ridiculous idea in theory and practice. They could probably set up their own Semi-pro league with similar money. The way to go is definitely working with the USARL. In the future I would like to see North American RL go further down the route of conferences. Several top division conferences then finals underpinned by city/regional 2nd division comps and juniors. Of course there is a lot of hard work to be done first.

Maybe a North America Challenge Cup would work along side this well, Canadian, US and Jamaican clubs to start with the possibility of others joining if/when they are set-up, Mexico for example.

They have sponsors and strong ratings.

By playing in a recognised comp in the UK it will build their profile and hopefully allow admission into 2nd tier and eventually the SL.
It's not a recognized comp, the average crowd in Championship 1 is about 600 and most of the teams are based in small towns or suburbs that the majority of people in England have never heard of, let alone Canadians. This wouldn't make any sense even for Super League, for Championship One it's just f**king weird to even suggest.

Over here we have A PNG team and Fiji to follow. They need to cover other teams costs. Toronto to UK is prob a bit too far for a similar to work. Atleast they aren't going for a SL place

While it's great that we have such an enthusiastic group of businessman that see the potential Rugby League has this seems to be a recurring story of aiming beyond what's realistic. We've seen so many grandiose ideas before get put to bed hence why we have so much scepticism when anything like this comes up.

If Eric is in it for the long haul then what he needs to do is stump up cash and work with the RLIF to get a foothold in the junior age groups. Maybe entice an NRL/ESL game to Canada to build the profile of the game. Building a team from the top down just isn't a good sustainable plan.

Like others have said, CRL should be looking at working collaboratively with the USARL in working towards a combined comp which can maybe one day develop into a Professional comp.

Bloody hell, looks like they're entertaining the idea.

My response still stands from my post 3 posts above.

Newspaper reports on Wednesday morning say the Rugby Football League will give the green light to the creation of a team based in Toronto for the 2016 season.
The Canadians are believed to be prepared to cover the travelling expenses for themselves and their opponents.
They would play four consecutive home games before travelling 3,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean for a quartet of away fixtures.
McDermott believes teams will jump at the chance to play away games in Canada, but he told Sky Sports News HQ that most players in League One are part-time and compensating for their time off work could prove to be a stumbling block.
“It’s certainly a far away day,” said the former Great Britain prop. “I first heard about this after the World Cup. The people in Canada are very passionate and the social media around their domestic league is again very enthusiastic.
“It’s not so much a surprise for the people inside the game. Obviously it has got some financial implications for the League One sides for away games but I’m sure they’d jump at the chance.
“My only question mark is how it will affect the day jobs of the players in League One as they typically aren’t full-time rugby league players. But it’s very exciting news if you’re a League One player.”
