Then they get taxed but can’t do anything funky with that. But say $3,500 in the hand a week yeah, that’s ok.

There’s different arguments as to why they should be well paid.

Firstly, if you pay them well, it makes them less susceptible to corruption.

Secondly, they are subject to review by the judicial commission, parliament and higher courts.

Thirdly, they spend their working days in unrelenting perpetual conflict.

I think there is an inherent personal danger in the job. They are gaoling crazy people every other day. They get abused and threatened etc.

Unlike the cops they aren’t wandering around with lethal force, stun guns and grenades or whatever.

I know a couple (not too well) they are very nice people in real life. Enjoy their rugby league.

if $3,500 a week is tough, there’s the top barristers out there earning $7,500 a f**king day ( after tax). I don’t anyones time is worth that kind of money.

Magistrates in QLD are closer to $370k and district court judges 390-400k + other allowances and perks on top of that.

It would be quite a solitary work life for large parts but given district court and above usually come from the bar that wouldn’t be hugely different for them.

Apart from rocking up to the court, the judges at least have to spend some time in homework writing up decisions and things.

There’s an unending source of work etc so they are inevitably very busy people.

For the most part, they get it right but they make mistakes. They misapply the law and deem things relevant that higher courts disagree with it, put weight on suspect evidence.

Cardinal Pell is considered a good example of a miscarriage of justice. What happened is the process broke down rationally and then the ship later righted itself. The key thing being the process. The system moves away from alleged and finding of facts to process and this is where it can get tricky.

A great issue with justice in this country, is the lack of access to it attributable to lack of resources. The system demands complexity but the wherewithal to meet that is elusive for many people.

The political will to address this has been lacking for some time, not so the budgets of law enforcement, government agencies and regulators.

So us punters are up against it.

The Curtis Scott incident springs to mind. Deliberately false allegations by law enforcement shows where we are these days. That’s not to denigrate the good and honest cop.

Justice is out of reach for many. Legal Aid is for the very poor and is massively underfunded.

It is all getting a bit banana republic-ish. Favours the rich and powerful unfortunately. It should serve everyone, be funded as well as health or defence.
