IRN
Jason Death has been given some time out by Warriors coach Daniel Anderson to think about his game.
The hooker is missing from the team to play the Bulldogs at Ericsson Stadium on Saturday and his place on the bench has been taken by Nathan Wood.
Anderson says Death has been dropped on form.
He says the week off will give the experienced forward a chance to brush-up on his skills and cut the errors out of his game

I wouldn't read too much into it. Yes Doc has gone off the boil a bit, but I wouldn't think that has warrented his dropping from the side.

I think the club are just in two minds on Nat Wood. They're probably wanting to give him a decent chance before throwing him back across the ditch.

Jason Death: Value for money.

by Richard Becht A clever line came out of Australia this week. As reinstated South Sydney revealed a rash of signings for its return to the NRL in 2002, one writer noted the Rabbitohs would be "inflicting Death and Grief" on the competition next year. He was, of course, referring to two of South Sydney's signings - popular Warrior Jason Death and Newcastle prop Glenn Grief. The fact is Souths has already left an air of "death and grief" in the Warriors' world. And it's fair to expect plenty of clubs will find Souths living up to that line next year. Some useful talent has been secured. Death and Grief represent genuine value and so, too, do 2002 captain Adam Muir (Northern Eagles), former Kangaroo centre Russell Richardson (Sharks), Anthony Colella (Canberra) and Brad Watts (Melbourne). But it's the signing of Death that's naturally caused real Grief among Warriors followers. Astute observers aren't entirely surprised he's been released. It's been clear this season that the former Canberra and North Queensland hooker has lost some of the zip that had set him apart as one of the best - if underrated - No.9s going round in the competition. Where the "Doctor" used to explode out of dummy half in his first two seasons at Ericsson Stadium, he hasn't been able to regularly replicate that zippiness this year. In short, he seems to have lost that invaluable yard of pace which had always been one of his undoubted assets. By his own admission, his defence hasn't been as assured this year either. It doesn't mean he's no longer a valuable player. Far from it and Souths coach Craig Coleman can confidently expect Death to prove that in 2002. His work rate's impressive and, while he's missed a few key tackles lately, the power of his defence has always been astonishing. He's unquestionably one of the best budget players on the market. That's why the Rabbitohs would rather have Death than the far more expensive Luke Priddis who's moving from Brisbane to Penrith. But the Doctor's departure will be the death of an era at Ericsson. The Warriors have been home to a swag of top-line talent. There've been Kiwi internationals galore in Dean Bell, Matthew Ridge, Stephen Kearney, Sean Hoppe, Tea Ropati, Joe Vagana, Richie Blackmore, Frano Botica, Duane Mann, Gene Ngamu, Terry Hermansson, Quentin Pongia and others as well as All Black legend John Kirwan. And still with the club is the best of the lot, the wee champion Stacey Jones, the only player who's been a first grade fixture in each of the club's first seven seasons. The non-New Zealanders have included some often-expensive superstars such as Denis Betts, Greg Alexander, Phil Blake, Andy Platt, Lee Oudenryn, Mark Tookey, Ivan Cleary, John Simon, Robert Mears and now Kevin Campion (plus a few others). But on a value for money basis and a level of consistent performance, Death is probably inferior only to the exceptional Stacey Jones. He arrived at Ericsson unheralded, brought to Auckland by new coach Mark Graham for the 1999 season. All anyone really knew about him was that he'd been a journeyman at Canberra and the Cowboys, accumulating just over 100 appearances since his first grade debut in 1991 (many of them from the bench). Graham, though, told everyone who cared to listen that Death was a special player. The Kiwi great didn't prove to be right about a lot of things in his two years as Warriors coach. After all, it was Graham who always insisted Scott Coxon was "a real athlete". No one, Graham apart, could ever figure out what he saw in such an ordinary footballer. But he could never be faulted about his assessment of Death. That was immediately evident in his first preseason trail match in Hamilton and he excelled from that moment on. Inspirational on the field, he's also been a positive influence off it as a genuine personality footballer. Everyone warms to Jason Death. He could still prove to be an enormous asset in the Warriors' bid to make the top eight play-offs for the first time, if coach Daniel Anderson lets him. Clearly the mix now has Monty Betham as the starting hooker and it's possible Nathan Wood has sneaked ahead of Death as the interchange option (especially now Death is set to leave). But after 53 matches so far in his three years in Auckland, the Doctor has those special qualities that can lift the team and bring it home. If the Warriors are to make the grade at last, no player would deserve the chance to be part of it more than him. When they had their battles in 1999 and 2000, no one put in more than the 29-year-old. Now the Warriors have just five matches left in their play-offs bid, Sunday's encounter against Penrith as crucial as any of them. Give the Doctor a role and he'd ensure it was a case of Death or Glory.

<!--NZ RUGBY-->

<SPACER TYPE="block" WIDTH="22" HEIGHT="15">

<SPACER TYPE="block" WIDTH="428" HEIGHT="15">

<SPACER TYPE="block" WIDTH="15" HEIGHT="15">

<!--
