On monday the staff at the NZRFU where told that despite the promises given and agreements reached the world cup will not be coming to NZ.

Phone calls are no longer being returned and meeting canceled and it now appears money has again won out against honor.

And the biggest back stabber of the lot looks like the same organisation that did it last time....

WOW big call, why are Henry, Helen Clark and co still going through the paces if we are out of the running ??

Do you have any idea who it is going to then ? Please dont let it be SA.

I will be VERY pissed off if it goes to SA. I can handle us being snubbed for Japan in the name of international development, but giving the tournament to SA again after they had it in '99 is a slap in the face for NZ especially considering the fact that they also get the football WC around the same time. Plus I'd back us to win in neutral japan but SA would be favourites at home.

it may only be in preperation for the bad news.. but they are all pretty devastated at the NZRFU.....the wifes old work mates were not happy thats gfor sure... The only bright part of the whole thing is the 100+ Million they have in reserve for the cup will now probably end up going straight into grass roots rugby...

I heard that the frogs are going to vote for SA in return for support for France's bid for the '07 tournament, is this true?

True SpaceMonkey, SA and France is a case of "you scratch my back, I scratch yours" they supported the French bid so the French will do the same in return. Ditto with England who are likely to launch a 2015 bid them and SA have already made a "gentleman's agreement."

They also have built up a surprisingly strong relationship with the Argentians thanks to playing tests against them every year when AUS and NZ generally ignore them, that is another vote in the bag.

Add in a potential competition involving Currie Cup teams playing against Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Italian clubs and they are likely to secure even more votes.

SA have played their cards right and are in a good position.

NZ didn't do enough to secure votes IMO, of course now the NZRFU are going to blame it all on us again even though I think the ARU did the right thing in pledging to support the Japanese bid, but no one can argue that the AB's haven't exactly made many friends up in the Northern Hemipshere as of late.

Japan, well they are relying on the IRB to actually put the good of the game before greed which the IRB would never do and trying to use the "neutral ground factor"(ie. Japan most likely not making it past the pool stage leaving no clear advantage to any team) to appeal to other countries.

SA have apprently said they'll vote for NZ if they fail in the first round and it comes down to NZ vs Japan. So here's hoping that SA are snubbed by most countries due to having hosted in the last 10 years and already having the soccer.
If the NZ bid fails I think some of the war chest should be used to set up for a 2015 bit- namely by investing in some stadia upgrades, namely Eden Park, Jade and Carisbrook.

Jock should have had more faith in him self..... He saved the NZRFU when Paker tried to take over and he's done it again.... Honor it seems has won out against the money... All those deals done months ago have been honored, it will still be interesting to see who the ARU voted for after promising to bank NZ then apartently backing Japan... And who would have thought that the Yarpies would be the ones to save the day... wont be saying a bad word about SA again... for a while at least.

the ARU and IRB may have done us a favour, we wouldn't have got the world cup in 2011 if we had co-hosted it in 2003
Yep, and those people who are whingeing about NZ getting the cup can go and whinge to the IRB and the ARU for scuppering the joint bid in '03.

To be fair our rugby administrators did a crap job in 03, we came out of it looking like idiots! not all can be pushed ARU/IRB's way.

Sure, the NZRFU f*cked up big time, but it could have been worked through, instead the ARU basically took advantage to grab sole hosting rights. All three organisations could have behaved a lot better at the time I think.
At least the NZRFU have obviously sorted their act out now, they must've really pulled out the stops to land this. It should also mean that Eden Park and hopefully a few other grounds (Carisbrook could do with some major work and a second covered stand at North Harbour would be great) get some long overdue upgrades.

SpaceMonkey, the NZRU vetoed a 4th Australian Super 12 franchise a year or two before, so NZ didn't have a right to complain about backstabbing re RWC 2003.

Anyway, its good to see NZ get RWC 2011, it should be a good one, and hopefully its because they presented the best bid, and not so much because they did the best deals (although I'm sure they did and run it well).

Hopefully the NZRL and Warriors will take advantage of the opportunity and push to get funding to build covered North and South stands. North Harbour should get an upgrade too, because these are some of the few top class rectangular stadia in Auckland AND NZ.

Excellent point. That could add another 4K or so and would really complete Ericcson as a top class facility.
