Where abouts in England is Widnes?

In australia, our competition is reasonably well spread out, we do cover 4 states (3 states, 1 territory), being qld, nsw, act and victoria.
As i understand it, the english super league is based in yorkshire, lancashire and the one lone club in london. is widnes in the same location as any of these areas? also, where abouts is cumbria? is it a county and do any teams in the nfp or superleague come from there?

thanks, hutch

Widnes is in Cheshire. Cumbria is a county.

If you bring in the NFP as well as the ESL pro RL is played in East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and North Yorshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater London and Tyne and Wear.

As you can see there is a "slight" northern bias to the distribution of northern teams:)

Hopefully a Welsh side (at least) will soon be added.

If you look at the amateur game there are RL teams in all counties of England and teams in all of the Home Countries.

BTW - why don't you also include NZ in your spread of teams? 3 states, 1 territory, 1 country!

Hutch, Widnes is close to Warrington and St Helens, it is on the banks of the river Mersey just a few miles upstream from Liverpool. Hope you can see this map to give you an idea of where the majority of SL clubs are.

you're right kier, i totally forgot about new zealand. if anybody knows where abouts rugby league is played in nz, let us know, i presume almost everywhere.

thanks for the map gavbt, it seems as if there are alot of teams based in 2 seperate areas. i take it that the proffessional soccer clubs would be based throughout all of england, as i understand the popularity of the game. i am interested to know the spread of your 1st division rugby union teams in comparison with the league teams. here we do not have a national competition, just 3 teams which represent states, and district club competitions in sydney and brisbane but none of which make the news and only draw a couple of hundred spectators.

Pepe, Brett Kenny had a spell at Wigan back in 1985 the same year that Sterlo played for Hull, in fact they played on opposite sides in the 1985 challenge cup final, one of the classic finals.

Widnes were a top side from the late 70's until about 1990. They always seemed to be on thebox along with Hull whenever I watched any Rugby League back in the early to mid 80's.
