Where do I sign on ?

I think that might be the only way of signing on, through a reply or starting a new thread.
That's the way I do it anyway.

in the top right hand corner (just to the left of the 3 sheep) is a "sign in " icon,i usually go for that, or, as you say on the "reply" button.
some have a "members sign in here" sign but not all......

I find that if I check my hotmail first i don't have to sign in. They are both msn things. I sign intohotmail automatically so I don't have to remember passwords if I do it this way.

What you can also do the next time you sign in is click on the box to automatically sign you in on this computer. That should solve everything. You don't need to enter your password anymore.
