2018, we were an Edrick Lee forward pass call away from finishing equal first on points, and fourth on f/a.

2015, Johnson went down mid-season as we were sitting fourth, we didn't know how to win without him.

2017, Roger went down in round eight, ditto, we looked lost without him.

1995, do some basic maths and not have a TVNZ reporter doing her job properly, and, well, you know.

1996, we sacked our inaugural coach, setting a haunting precedent, when we should've kept improving on a pretty good first year in a bloody tough competition.

2009, instead of 'we did it for Sonny' we got a capitulation.

2001, we were still recovering, structurally, from the poorly managed last few years.

2004, we demanded our young star, of PI-background, to state 'footy means more than family' He left.

2005, in hindsight, Tony Kemp shouldn't have taken charge of a competitive NRL side. We deserved better.

1997, we turned our back on the ARL, which had just 'five minutes ago' granted us a massive favour by letting us join their competition, to sign with a media company's version of it.

1998 (or '99?) we sold out to Tainui who didn't seem up to running a successful NRL club.

2012, our really good side from the last few years was suddenly handed an untested coach.

2014, Cappy should've started Chad, not TL, in the halves, in our must-win last game at Penrith.

2007, how far would we have gone in the finals if we hadn't lost in-form Manu and Jerome in the last round win at Penrith?

2010, we had a life in the finals, but for a Tigers royal stuff-up in the last defensive scrum of their final against Easts. Cleary was seconds away from pressing 'send' on a 'see you at training' SMS to the team.

There'd be variables in every season.

Remains a real issue of culture, was good for two brief periods...

Yes, I did this last night on excel, as, well, what else is there to do in lockdown. The last 10 years have been dire really.
You'd think the first 10-15 years would be a solid base to build from. Not to be.
You'd think after the first 10-15 years there'd be an extensive local talent base. Not to be.
Every year of the last 10 years has been a re-build year.

Roger's injury was 2016. 2017 was sort of a mini-2015, Shaun got injured just as we were looking ok (although not as good as 2015).

2007 and 2010 are underrated seasons because we didn't do well in the finals. In each case we actually did worse the following season, but people remember those seasons better because we made a run in the finals. 2010 took an absolutely bizarre set of circumstances for us to be eliminated in round 1. 2007 as you say we were really unlucky to lose Manu and Jerome.

In retrospect Cleary did amazingly well with those 2007 and 2008 teams in particular. We finished 4th with Witt/Rovelli/Fien/Gatis running the show. Cleary had a real knack of squeezing solid performances out of journeyman players but then he also tended to hamstring himself by relying on those types of players and on negative gameplans.

2018 was so recent yet so easily forgotten too. A bizarre season where as you say, we could easily have finished first equal.
