Which club has developed the most NRL players from the Under 20s?

This is a very good point. Kite, Matai, Watmough, the Stewarts, Lyon and King were all playing first grade for Manly since NYC came into existence. None have needed to be replaced until recently. But as the article says, Manly use their NYC (and NSW Cup side for that matter) differently to other clubs. They put little focus into achieving success in lower grades as long as they get a trickle of talent from the lower grades to first grade. It's a system that has worked pretty well and kept Manly competitive and successful for a long time.

Manly's strategy is going to have to hover around develop low paid NYC talent to compensate for the outrageous proportion of the cap DCE is taking up...

Funny thing looking back on it is that you see which positions teams seem to be strong at developing and bringing into first grade.

Souths are good with outside backs, halves and hookers.

From the NYC since 2008;

Backs settled in NRL: James Roberts, Josh Mansour, Dylan Farrell, Alex Johnston, Dylan Walker,

Have played NRL: Tyrone Phillips, Kane Morgan, Junior Vaivai, Aaron Gray, John Olive

Halves settled in NRL: Chris Sandow, Adam Reynolds, Luke Keary

Have played NRL: Eddie Paea (lel)

I'd dare say all our hookers have settled in the NRL at some point: Beau Falloon, James Segeyaro, Nathan Peats, Api Koroisau, Cameron McInnes

Funny you say that. I was surprised that I couldnt think of outside backs for Penrith. I had to go Yeo who is really a back rower, Roberts, who did play NYC for us but had already made his NRL debut with Siuths, DWZ who is a fullback.

We have some good ones coming through now, but in 7 years of NYC f**k all really.

Where a player is born and grows up is completely irrelevant to NRL development.

The Knights fund the Newcastle/Hunter junior leagues, then the rich clubs (who contribute nothing) cherry pick the talent. Pretty relevant to us.

Must be a different Lachlan Coote who made the 2008 NYC team of the year.

McKendry and Graham named in Penrith's under 20's squad

Tim Grant named here

So yeah maybe you should get your shit together.

Bulldogs have a pretty good side except for the wingers (unless there are players I can't think of). Chucked Mbye at centre to fit him, Reynolds and Sezer all in. Cheated a bit with Tyrone Phillips too because he only played a few games for the Bulldogs in under 20's before moving to NSW Cup after signing him from Souths but I guess he technically still fits. There may also be someone better than Lane to pick but I think he will be a star in a few years

1. Barba
2. Phillips
3. Lafai
4. Mbye
5. Idris
6. Reynolds
7. Sezer
8. Kasiano
9. Carter
10. Klemmer
11. Jackson
12. Lane
13. Finucane

3 Aus reps, 1 NZ rep, 1 Samoa rep, 1 NSW rep, 1 Dally M medalist and 1 country rep

Taupau for Lane

12. Alex McKinnon
13. Jack De Belin
14. Jackson Hastings
15. Cameron King
16. Shannon Wakeman
17. Jack Stockwell

Not a lot of good forwards developed by us since the NYC. Particularly strange since it was all we could pump out for a number of years before the comp kicked off, especially props.

Pretty much the problem for us in the forwards;

George Burgess (But he came from England so eh)
Dave Tyrrell (Nothing special)
Kyle Turner (Still getting to his feet in NRL)
Josh Starling (Meh)
Jason Clark (Same as Tyrrell)

Were all I could think of.

The Toyota Cup is everything that is right and wrong with the NRL rolled into one package. Most clubs do not give a toss about it cos chances are their best will leave for another club anyway if the bigger clubs come calling.

When you say they fund Jnr RL in what way? Do they pay for kit and insurance etc?

What would the NRL do if a club refused to assist junior development somewhere . . . anywhere

WA has no club funding Jnr development. Just the hard work of local amateur clubs and the warl with a bit of nrl funding. Leagues clubs exist to fund Jnr sport, nrl clubs should have no part in it, NRL should be funding through the state body things like a national insurance scheme, kit reduced costs, equipment and development grants etc.

I was talking to some people, here who started a Jnr RL club up recently and the problems and difficulties they had and still have getting support is ridiculous. Basically very little available to help volunteers get clubs up and running. Credit to them they have perceived and now have a great Jnr club with a number of teams up and running.

The Warriors are probably the anomaly there - they know they have to develop players because they'll pay overs to get imports compared to Australian clubs, but they're also more likely to be able to retain the bulk of their juniors. The current squad reflects this.
