Yeah I admitted those things too.
But there's no doubt that the Broncos were aided by being the only Brisbane club. That winning culture was fostered by teams of Origin players, and will keep players heading there for a while. But they aren't going ot have it all their own way now, and players will see what happens to the senior men and realise it's a business. Look at Saints - two years or so ago they punted Thompson, and it was turmoil. Now some of their juniors are leaving because they know there's no loyalty any more.
But none of the players leaving the Broncos have been punted. There's still plenty of loyalty there but the long serving players at Brisbane have always realised they've had to show a bit in return by sacrificing a bit of coin. I don't think Petero sends any great message through the club, he was still offered a very generous and competitive contract but there was always going to be clubs out there that could offer a bit more and along came Penrith.
The other thing that the Broncos offer is stability. Players know what they're getting at Brisbane. We've had the same coach for 20 years now, very few captains most of whom have been long serving and no mass player sackings which just about every other club has gone through at some point in time. Football is a business these days and you can't underrate stability.
Look at Petero, he signs mid season with the Panthers and now come the end of the season half the squad won't be there next season, they've got the spoon and the coach's position is being questioned with a demand for results next year or it's likely he'll be shown the door.
I'm very confident in the foundation we've built and that we've got the culture now set in place and ingrained in every single player that comes through the ranks that even in a salary cap envionment we can continue to hold on to players for significant chunks of their careers.
