Who is Glen Black?

The NZ ref for our test against Britain.

Is he good enough for the NRL? If so why aren't we using him?

Sounds like the old Grasshopper days.

Made a very good impression in Super League too. He came over this season and reffed a few games. I saw him at the St Helens - London game and he controlled the game really well. London won that night and I went home bemoaning his decision to not give what looked like a clear obstruction that lead to the Broncos winning try. Despite being the only person in the ground who had that opinion and despite it being his first game in Super League, he called it and he got it right. The TV replays showed it to be a fair try. The personal abuse he has copped for from Bennett in the press over here is so unnecessary and on the evidence so far, very misplaced.

Glen Black IMO opinion is a solidly and consistently average referee. If forced to say whether or not he should ref a Test Id probably say no. While he may have done several rep games, some super league exchange matches he is at the end of the day a Bartercard referee. Thats his week in week out refereeing level.

Referees here in NZ (again IMO) who want a career path need to consolidate their efforts and move to the UK or Aussie and work there way up just like professional footballers do or accept that there reputation WONT preceed them and people will ask "Whos he?"

Well if theyre not happy with the ref, and the IRL want neutral ref's why not bring in a French. Not sure whos going around but does anyone remember Julian Rasconyous (Spelling?)

I mean its good that they want neutral ref's for International matches. I reckon they should do that most of the time.

Meanwhile, it looks like new international kiwi league referee Glen Black will not get the chance to control an Australia v Great Britain test after all.

Black is off to the UK, but the Aussies still do not want him, so a compromise is being drawn up for the remaining tri-series tests.

Cordtz says rather than kicking up a stink against Australia they are making sure Black has some game time.

He says the Brits have agreed to use Black and their own ref Russell Smith in the upcoming tests against the Kiwis, with the Australia v Great Britain matches controlled by Smith and Aussie Tim Mander.

Cordtz says they do not agree with Australia's latest move, despite reports to the contrary.

But Cordtz says in a positive, the Aussies are guaranteeing to help develop New Zealand referees in the NRL.

-------------------------------------------------

Credit to Great Britain and New Zealand who are willing to give Black a go. Australia meanwhile continue to push for their own referees.

Another reason why ARL rule the Rugby League World.....they know with a Kiwi referee they could lose...

A quater of a century worth of dominance isnt going to end because of some sub standard Kiwi ref.

The fact is Australia wants a professional ref who is up to speed. Is that a crime?

what a load of bullshit

if players like thomas leulaui can come out of bartercard and perform credibly for NZ

then theres no reason why glen black
(after already performing credibly in the aus v eng 'a' match) cant perform credibly in a test match

There is no reason why there can't be neutral refs - French and NZ refs performed well in the RLWC2000 - and have put in solid performances since then in other matches.

Mick Stone, head of NRL referees said he was up to the required standard, so should that be enough? The other guys commenting are not referee's and are all saying if the guy is up to the standard well before even seeing him.

It's our own fault for not blooding Kiwi officials in the NRL.

The Poms should also do more with French officials in RSL (although Alibert has controlled some games). UTC will improve that.

I tyhink Black is good enough. He's reffed the Roos before.

Neutral refs should be at the foundation of international RL matches.

Should be a neutral ref. If he's the best ref NZ has, then why not? We should develop refs in international level the same way sides seek to develop players skills at that level.
