Who replaces Ponting?

So with the ponting era coming to an end Australia must choose who to succeed him at 3 or 4 for the series against Sri Lanka. So who do you guys favor? Should we go for a verteran to help regain the Ashes who look to a younger player?

These at the top 5 Shield run scorers according to Cricinfo as of the 29th of November:

1. PJ Hughes 518@51.80
2. CJ Ferguson 463@42.09
3. UT Khawaja 438@39.81
4. AJ Doolan 409@58.42
5. MJ Cosgrove 373@37.30

Personally I would go with Ferguson or Khawaja as they are proven middle order batsmen and a guy like Hughes has not proven himself against top class spinners imo. I am a Khawaja fan so he would probably be my first choice but Ferguson has really become the forgotten man of Australian cricket even though he has quite a strong record at ODI level. I think whoever is left out of Ferguson and Khawaja will succeed Hussey anyway.

Phil Hughes.

And top class spinners? Pfft there are hardly any left these days.

Phil Hughes is shields leading run scorer. He was almost picked to replace Watson instead of Quiney (which proves they were considering him for the middle order). Since then he's scored the most runs in domestic cricket. The answer to the question of who replaces Ponting begins and ends with Phillip Joel Hughes.

An interesting fact: Phils 24th birthday is tomorrow. Pontings retirement is a nice present.

Hughes never looks comfortable against spin imo and you have very conveniently in all your Hughes love left out the stat that against SA at the SCG he made 5 and 1* while batting at 3. You want to bat him at 3/4 because his the comps leading run scorer but want to ignore a man who will bat 3/4 for Aus for a long time in Khawaja. Statistically there is nothing between them this year:

Hughes
HS:158
100s:1
50s:3

Khawaja:
HS:164
100s:1
50s:3

Hughes will get a shot again but 5 matches is nowhere near enough to determine whether he has overcome his technique issues. Khawaja should come in at 3 and allow Watson to move to 4 and take more pressure off Watson.

Hughes for Cowan...when Cowan starts to fail.

Would actually bat Watson 3 and Usman 4. With two lefty openers and and right hand 5, suits the team.

My god it will be so bloody satisfying when Hughes is announced for the Hobart test. To stick it right up some of the trolls on here.

Khawaja....I rate Ferguson, but he won't get a shot. Unless they move Cowan to three, there really is no other option, and I don't see them moving a recent Test centurion out of his spot at this stage and I don't see them bumping Watson down.

Should be Uzzy, although I would've found a way to keep Quiney in the side for Perth and told him that if he makes runs he keeps his spot.

Seriously. Quiney is being mentioned with a straight face? That park cricketer isn't even good by shield standards.

Phillip Joel Hughes. End of story.

Khawaja or Hughes. Although Doolan wouldn't be a horrible choice. Just gotta give one of them a decent chance and hope they take it.

Pretty much has to be Khawaja.. they won't change either of the openers positions and Hughes is a specialist opener in my opinion.

XI for Sri Lanka series : -

1) Warner
2) Cowan
3) Watson
4) Khawaja
5) Clarke
6) M.Hussey
7) Wade
8) Siddle
9) Starc
10) Hilfenhaus
11) Lyon

12) Johnson / Hazlewood
