I'd love to see him in a Warriors jersey but I doubt if the coaching staff would want another "Headache"

I bet the Rabbitohs will welcome him with open arms.

well here you go then

I would say no, not because Mudine wasn't a great player because he was, maybe he still is, but we need to start give our own grass roots standoffs a chance having choc in the team would be great in the short term, but in the long term we are better off developing our own standoffs (Ropati, Hohaia) who will also hopefully go on to become valuable assets to NZ in rep footy. (I think everyone would agree we need decent halves to compete with GB and AUS)

I think it's about time The Warriors got some ego into them. They have some of the most humble guys you'll ever meet. I think Mundine will be really good for the team.

But yes, it will be yet another headache for the #6 selection and ultimately it will be Ropati & Hohaia that suffer. So it's pretty tough to call this one.

I think The Warriors will be looking very attractive to The Man. He still wants to continue boxing and the Warriors have instant connections with Cullen Sports. So I think we have a better chance than most of getting him. Mic Watson seemed excited when he was interviewed about Mundine.

This could get very interesting :!:

What Ozbash, what. I think the Warriors have some extremely talented athletes who have got to back themselves more. And if they're not going to do it, I think Mundine will be all to happy to sell them on his own.

Warriors woo The Man
By Adam hawse and Peter Badel
April 10, 2005

ANTHONY Mundine has held secret talks with the New Zealand Warriors and is set to join the club after his world title fight next month.

'Choc' is considering a return to rugby league.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that leading player manager Wayne Beavis, acting on behalf of Mundine, flew to Auckland to negotiate a match payments contract.

It is understood he will be signed to a more lucrative contract next year in an arrangement that would see halfback Stacey Jones leave the Warriors to play for French club UTC in the Super League.

Mundine, 29, announced last week that he wants to return to the NRL because he has "unfinished business".

Speaking from the NSW central west town of Bathurst yesterday, Mundine would not confirm talks with the Warriors. However, he did talk of the strong relationship he has with the Auckland-based club.

"The Warriors are a great team," he said. "I had a fight over in New Zealand a few years ago and I got on well with a few guys, including Clinton Toopi, Monty Betham and Stacey Jones.

"I don't want to get into which club I'll join and I'm not going to decide on a club until a week after my fight.

"Right now, [Mikkel] Kessler [WBA world champion who fights Mundine on May 11] is my sole focus."

The former NSW Origin representative has not played at NRL level since walking out on St George Illawarra midway through the 2000 season.

Mundine formed a strong connection with the Warriors in the lead-up to his regional title fight with Kiwi Sean Sullivan in Auckland in early 2003.

He trained with the Warriors and was presented with a Warriors No6 jersey with his name on the back. Mundine has fond memories of being mobbed by the New Zealand media and public and likes the idea of being a big fish in a little pond.

A Team Mundine insider confirmed the St George junior would have no problems playing for the Warriors.

"I wouldn't be surprised at all if he went to the Warriors," the source said.

"There are a couple of clubs he would go to. Easts [Roosters] are a good chance and he likes Souths, but 'Choc' has some strong ties with the Warriors. He gets on well with the players and also Mick Watson [Warriors chief executive].

"The Warriors have an appreciation of Choc, too. He trained with the squad two years ago and they presented him with a Warriors jumper with No6 on it."

Mundine said in yesterday's The Daily Telegraph that he intends to continue boxing while playing in the NRL. He boasts a 23-2 win-loss record, with 18 knockouts.

Warriors make it personal in fight to sign 'The Man'
10 April 2005
By STEVE KILGALLON

The Warriors last night vehemently denied they are intending to trade Stacey Jones with a year to run on his contract in a bid to secure controversial league-star-turned boxer Anthony Mundine.

The Sunday Star-Times was told yesterday that Mundine had held secret talks with the Warriors this week via the game's leading player manager Wayne Beavis in Auckland on Thursday and Friday.

Warriors boss Mick Watson denied he had even met Beavis when quizzed by the Star-Times before the team's 24-6 loss to the Wests

made personal calls to Anthony Mundine yesterday in an effort to persuade the league-star-turned-boxer to join the club next month.

All but three of the 15 NRL clubs have shown interest in recruiting Mundine, who has declared his intention to return to the sport, but the Warriors see themselves as frontrunners.

It was suggested yesterday their main competition for the controversial former St George utility, tagged "the Man", would come from the Sydney Roosters.

Warriors CEO Mick Watson, Mundine himself and his manager, Khoder Nasser, all denied a deal had already been concluded. Watson said he had made a formal approach to Nasser, but had been told to wait until after Mundine's May 11 WBA super-middleweight title fight against Mikkel Kessler to start negotiations.

Mundine has indicated he would combine the two sports by fighting only a single annual mandatory defence of his title. Watson said Mundine could do it under the Cullen Sports banner.

Watson was confident Mundine's associations with the club over the past two years would help sway him. "There are a few things that make us one of the frontrunners: Anthony is aligned to the club, he has worn our jersey into the ring to fight Sean Sullivan; we have a good relationship with both him and Khoder; and obviously the indigenous core of the club is attractive.

"The brand of football we play is exciting to an athlete like him, so we have a lot to offer. But it comes down to him, and sometimes it is hard to get someone to get a passport and come over."

Mundine attended the Warriors' 2003 finals series matches, visiting the dressing room for post-match celebrations, and Warriors owner Eric Watson was at ringside for a January 2004 title fight. Nasser has worked as a consultant to Cullen as it attempts to break into the boxing market.

Mundine would effectively be outside this season's salary cap because he has not played senior football for more than 12 months. NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert said he could be paid up to $3000 a match without it counting as cap money.

Watson said most clubs would offer similar packages for 2005. "Anyone will be able to offer the same basic deal, the big challenge is how you would pay him for the next two years."

Watson said it was too early to consider how the club could accommodate Mundine on a full contract for 2006 onwards.

Mundine said yesterday his comeback was driven by painful memories of St George's 1996 and 1999 losing grand final appearances. "Going back to rugby league is something I've been thinking about for a while," he said. "It's been on my mind for over six months."

Hey look, another Sunday paper article, it must be true

Oui oui Missuer Jones, we have the best fishing out here. Would you like some cham-pag-knee? Oui Missuer, that is le correct pronounciation.

League: Mundine could pack punch for Warriors

10.04.05
By MICHAEL BROWN

Anthony Mundine has confirmed that the Warriors are one of the clubs he is considering for his much-publicised leap back into NRL. Mundine intends making a league comeback after five years as a professional boxer, and the Warriors are one of a handful of NRL clubs jostling to sign him.

The 29-year-old former Dragons five-eighths will defend his super-middleweight title against WBC champion Mikkel Kessler on May 11 and, about a week later, he will reveal the club he's chosen for his NRL comeback.

"The Warriors have a lot going for them - they have a great team, they are a great club and they are very professional," said Mundine yesterday.

"In Australia in recent years they have shown they can mix it with the best and I definitely think they are premiership quality. There's a great feeling at the Warriors. I'm friends with the likes of Stacey Jones, Monty Betham and Clinton Toopi." Mundine's close relationship with the Warriors stretches back to 2003, when he was preparing for a fight against Sean Sullivan in Auckland. He used the Warriors' gym as part of his preparation, trained with the team and was presented with a Warriors jersey. Since then, club owner Eric Watson and chief executive Mick Watson have been guests at his fights, and Mundine also spent time with the Warriors during their road to the 2003 NRL grand final.

The fact that Cullen Sports, who own the Warriors, are also into boxing, could be an attractive option for the outspoken Mundine, who is hopeful of continuing his boxing career while playing league. He could fight as little as once a year if he lifts the WBC title next month.

Mundine said: "I've been thinking about this for about six months," he said. "I think I'll be ready to play again about a month or six weeks after the fight.

"Obviously you can't just jump in and be the best straight away but I set high standards for myself. I still feel I have got the talent and ability to perform."

However, the Warriors know there are at least six clubs keen to sign Mundine. Mick Watson said: "I think all 15 clubs will be keen to have him because he's someone who can play every position in the backline and he's talented, exciting to watch and is great with the ball in hand."

Mundine emphasised his return wasn't about money. As long as he was paid normal match payments - about $3,000 a game - he would be exempt from the salary cap.

Former Kiwis captain Hugh McGahan had little doubt Mundine could make a successful comeback and that he would be an exciting player for the Warriors. But he also expressed a word of caution. "If he got back to the form he showed before he left the game, he would be very good for the Warriors. But I don't think his personality will match the club.

"He is a demanding, outspoken and individual player and may not fit comfortably with the culture of the club and the players in there."

If the club lets Stacey go, that'll about do it for me as far as disbelief goes.

Stacey was born a Warrior, let him end his career as a Warrior. He's OUR man.

I'll be heartbroken if its the end for Stacey.

If i remember rightly someone called the Warriors show on Radio Sport on the weekend and asked about a rumor that he had heard that Stacey was going to play in France. I think Kempy and Becht denied knowledge then. Mind you, this has happened before...
