Who will be the Warriors new coach?

As the dust settles on the dramatic departure of Stephen Kearney, a host of names have quickly emerged as leading candidates to take over as coach of the Warriors. We rate their chances.

Anthony Griffin
Pros

Griffin has a strong pedigree after working at the Storm, Broncos and Panthers, while also helping steer Tonga to groundbreaking wins over Australia and England last year. Of the known candidates, Griffin has the best credentials. His coaching style has been described as "hard nosed".

Griffin couldn't restore the Broncos to former glories during a 100-game first grade career there, but his record was okay. Working under Phil Gould's management at Penrith, he should just about be bomb-proof, a handy weapon at the Warriors.

Started as a junior coach at Redcliffe, the Brisbane club which recently became the Warriors development system.

Cons

On the surface, being bladed by the Panthers in 2018 when in sight of the finals is hardly a strong recommendation. Then again, it was Phil Gould who wielded the axe, and there is no bigger ego in league. Gould accused Griffin of shunning the modern way of involving other opinions. Griffin reckoned Gould was happiest when the Panthers lost. Classic Aussie league.

Griffin also seems to have fashioned a career as a sort of new-age motivational mentor in the corporate world. Some may see this as a good thing. Some may not.

Chances: Very strong.

Nathan Brown

Pros

Brown was the early favourite in some minds, having already had brief special-assignment stints assisting Kearney.

This created the impression Brown was being lined up, because Kearney was clearly under pressure from new sole owner Mark Robinson.

The 46-year-old should be in his prime and comes across as someone who can fit in. He fashioned a pretty decent record as a young first grade coach at the Dragons, the club where he made his name as a player.

Cons

Brown really struggled with a dodgy squad at the Knights. And he'll start off with a dodgy squad at the Warriors. He lacks the wow factor, and hasn't created the impression of a winner. Brown once lost the plot on a sideline by getting physical with a few of his own Dragons players but that was a long time ago. Uncertain if he will even be available.

Chances: Decent if available.

Geoff Toovey

Pros

Legendary Manly Warringah figure, where he was a player and coach. Toovey typifies the Sea Eagles – a club with a tough mentality even if it is struggling to match old glories. He got them to one grand final.

He'd certainly make the press conferences interesting – he once called for an inquiry after his team lost a penalty count.

Cons

His reputation has been hurt through being unable to find another NRL job, since being fired by Manly in 2015.

Chances: Probably not as good as people might think.

Trent Barrett

Pros

The veteran NRL playmaker hasn't been out of work as long as Geoff Toovey, since being dumped as Manly coach two years ago. And he is assisting Ivan Cleary at Penrith, making him very current.

Cons

His Sea Eagles record doesn't excite.

Chances: Needs a great interview.

Tim Sheens

Pros

Been there and done that, over incredibly long career. Might be the perfect fit if the Warriors want to retain Todd Payten as their long term choice, and former prop Payten is willing to work under his old Tigers coach. Had some great days at the Raiders and Wests.

Sheens built one of the most famous teams of all time at the Raiders. At the Tigers, he won a premiership with a fairly ordinary squad in one of the great coaching performances, thanks largely to his work with Benji Marshall.

Cons

The 69-year-old has been out of the NRL for too long (eight years), which might put him behind the eight ball in tactics and pulling power with big name targets. But Wayne Bennett is still going strong, and he's a tad older than Sheens. Sheens really struggled at the Cowboys.

Chances: Might be better than imagined.

Shaun Wane

Pros

The 55-year-old – a brief British test forward – guided Wigan to three Super League grand final victories. Good enough to win the English coaching job this year.

The passion for the game which emanates from the few English league strongholds is infectious and unique. Their players have been making a huge impact in the NRL at clubs like the Rabbitohs and Raiders.

This is a guess, but Wane would bring a lot of character and fan engagement to the club compared to some of the more robotic Australian coaches. And English league treasures ball movement with a tradition of encouraging creative forwards, things which should be a trademark of the Warriors.

Cons

It would be a huge risk hiring an English coach at a wobbly NRL club. And European Super League teams are not known for great defence – the cornerstone of successful NRL campaigns.

Chances: Certainly an interesting candidate, but only an outside chance.

Todd Payten

Pros

A man on the rise according to the drum beats. Payten's initial media interviews as interim head coach reveal an authentic and down-to-earth character. If he was to perform a miracle under these circumstances it would be hard to turn him down if Payten felt ready. But nobody knows if he has the head coaching acumen yet, and they won't for some time.

Cons

Timing. Kearney's assistant, until the weekend drama, may not even have enough games in which to impress the Warriors bosses, before they make the new appointment. After all, a reason for sacking Kearney when they did was to give a new coach time to get everything in order before taking over next year.

It is clear the Warriors have no intention of making him their first grade coach. He would have to produce one of the great bursts of stunning and unexpected success to change the thinking.

Chances: Slim to zero.

Craig Fitzgibbon

Pros

The former goalkicking forward, an old Roosters favourite who played a stack of tests and State of Origin games, is getting a lot of great press assisting Trent Robinson at the Roosters. Fitzgibbon is a defensive specialist, which is exactly what the Warriors need.

Cons

No runs on the board as a head coach. Not worldly enough as a coach yet for such a challenging assignment at a club with such a wobbly history.

Chances: Minimal but the Roosters' reputation and his role in their rise means you can't rule him out if available.

Michael Maguire

Pros

Maguire would rival Griffin in favouritism if available. Took Wigan to titles, and more significantly broke South Sydney's long premiership drought in 2014. Maguire is famed for tough training sessions.

Cons

He already has a job at the Tigers, so he's not available. But there are weird whispers that the man who has done a respectable job as the Kiwis coach could somehow end up in the mix, seeing a more secure future in Auckland. Who would know with the NRL? It is a place where just about anything is possible. Maguire is infamous for tough training sessions.

Chances: Very high in the unlikely event he's available.

well, breaking contracts is the norm in the nrl these days so i give Maguire a great shot if hes interested. Premiership winner - tick. afffinity with kiwis - tick. superleague contacts - tick. Whether he has the desired pulling power to bring elite players to auckland - question mark.

No to Barrett, no to Payten... others all interesting in various ways

Not sure what to make of Brown - inherited a terrible situation at the Knights, people talk about a rebuild, but the reality is they cleared the cap and bought a team around a couple of locals - not sure there's any great skill in that... guess I'm not a fan...

Maybe a veteran - Sheens is intriguing...

Last time biggish names were bandied about we ended up with Matt Elliott, so maybe Trent Barrett is the go...

50 percent Toovey, 50 percent griffin.

Big fat no to brown. Fitzgibbon said no, Bennett said no, ryles.... meh. Payton long term.... meh.

If it’s not Toovey or griffin, it will be the wrong call

Weird comment on the Wane 'cons' - "And European Super League teams are not known for great defence – the cornerstone of successful NRL campaigns." Like yeah that's great and all, but Wane wasn't coaching any random Super League teams, he was coaching Wigan... a team that was specifically known for their defence. In a high scoring comp they were averaging pts/game conceded at a rate that would see the worst of Wane's years (outside of 2 horrific injury years) as top 3-4 in the NRL. Some of those years were Super 8s also... meaning more games vs the higher end of the table. Not that I'm a huge Wane fan, but that specific criticism seems very lazy.. at best.

I'll say this about vet coaches though: we've had, what, 22 completed seasons in the NRL era now?

You know how many comps have been won by coaches in their first (solo) NRL head coaching gig?

19.

And of the other 3, 2 of them were coaches who had already won a comp at a different club previously. The lone exception is John Lang.

Odds are NOT good on veteran coaches without a premiership on their record. (that said I'm still interested - a bit - in Toovey. Not so much in Griffin - doesn't strike me as the guy for whatever reason... can't quite articulate why right now - but Flanagan would be the real prize, if available).

Problem is, O'Brien went to Newie already and Demetriou has the Souths job... so it's not easy to see outstanding candidates. Fitzgibbon being touted highly, but I don't know (plus seems likely the Dragons will get him if they want him). Ryles mentioned, but again... I don't know. The Walkers deserve a shot somewhere.. why not here? At the very least it would be entertaining... that much is a guarantee.

Little bit off topic but whoever comes into coach hopefully they grow the club recruiting and development from within NZ. So often in recent times we’re seeing so many young players coming through who’ve all grown up in NZ but are now plying their trade across the tasman. Which leads me to my point ...... my son came home from school today (NZ) saying a 15yr old schoolmate and league 1/2 back is leaving school at years end to join top Sydney club and go to school in Sydney. I’ve seen this boy since he was 9 playing in my boys team and he’s a star. Speed, strength, time and loads of each of them. Sonny Bill was picked up as a 15yr old while at MAGS and left for Aus. It’s these stars i want to see talent ID’d and brought into the Warriors fold. What we’re doing currently is obviously wrong and has been for a long time. I know coaches need to recruit quality now to win today, but in my eyes, developing a recruitment long game is right up there as one of my biggest priorities.

There is a really good kid down here, Caius Fa’atilli. Sadly had no interest in the Warriors, was with the Cowboys and now with Brisbane

They need to get the young kids coming through dream of playing for the Warriors again

Of those currently active in job market i’d probably only go Griffin but even then i’m unsure. Admittedly he’s taken plenty of teams to the finals tho.
Toovey. I like his attitude but he pretty much rode Des’s coat tails for 3 yrs before getting his marching orders. Maybe a combo with Griffin and get best of both minds??
Brown. No.
Wane. No. Unproven in NRL and not worth that risk.
Ryles, Fitzgibbon. No and no along with any other 1st yr coach.
Bellemy. Bennett. Maguire. Yes Yes and Yes. But none of them are breaking their contract to coach us next year.

Apparently if journos as to be believed (haha), Wayne isn't shopping himself around and has no manager.
But others will be shopping him around and then taking the deals to him without his knowledge.
Basically gets offered his million a year and the person shopping him around take their X%
Wayne none the wise till the offer is in front of him.

Toovey still putting his hand up on NRL360.
Has spoken to someone over there and has been told the process will start soon.
First thing he wants to fix is attitude in defense.

Benny Elias was talking about wanting to be a Wallaby because of their song.
He may have written our recruiting/motivate song.
"I want to be a Warrior"
As we will not replace the All Black (as he stated).

Good points. I have a question.
I don't know where in the country you are but I suspect very few areas have an under 15 league competition. Am I wrong?
I can't see a local competition providing a strong enough coaching and playing environment to bring young men to their full potential.
So what are the alternatives? Should the NZRL or Warriors offer scholarships to these kids to a Sydney or Brisbane school?
I have thought for some time that the Warriors should identify and develop young talent. Do they still run school holiday programmes?

Under 15 league comps? Heck yes they do. My son's 5 and is in one right now - first game this weekend. I'm in Whangaparaoa and the Hibiscus Coast Raiders is a big league club for all ages. There are plenty of league opportunities for kids in Auckland.

Auckland def has a huge jnr league comp but does drop off a bit once they hit high school and 1st XV teams and school rugby academys come calling. At my boys school you can’t play 1st XV if your schooling is down or attitude is poor (But they have no issues with u playing n league team) and to be in academy u must commit to a school rugby team. Hence his school league team has all the big units and the 1st XV team look solid at best

Also just a comment on the Walker brothers. Ben Walker's son Sam, is tipped to be the next big thing and is a genuine #7. Signed with the Chooks for 2 years, so would probably come off contract end of 21 if my maths is correct.

Might be another advantage of going down that avenue

TBH I don't care if a coach is unproven or not, that's a dumb limitation to put on a hiring process unless a genuine top coach is available (and there isn't).

Having said that it's a big no no no NO to the Walker Brothers. Even ignoring the fact that only one of them is still coaching, their brand of football got them a newspaper article and a premiership with a pretty stacked roster a few years ago but really SFA since.

RE Walkers; neither is currently coaching, they left Ipswich to take the year off (originally I think it was going to be just one? but both ended up going). Keiron Lander is the current coach (he was captain of their premiership team).

Stacked.. nah. 1 of those guys (Kurt Capewell) is a regular first grader 5 years on. Only 1 other guy made an NRL debut - Matt Parcell, 21 games between Broncos & Manly and has been in the Super League ever since. It was a little above average for the QRL, but by no means stacked - the Blackhawks were the stacked team that year.

Almost every year there they outperformed their roster - and some of those rosters were baaaad. Doesn't mean they'll do it at NRL level... but you've undersold their Ipswich run there.
