Williams not worrying about Kimmorley

25 May 2004

South Sydney's Joe Williams means no disrespect to Cronulla captain Brett Kimmorley when he says he hasn't even thought about marking the former Test halfback in Saturday night's NRL clash at Toyota Park.

Williams, 20, will make his first grade debut this weekend at the expense of Willie Peters, who's been axed following the Rabbitohs' 26-12 loss to fellow cellar dwellers NZ Warriors on Sunday.

"No disrespect to Brett but I'll just be treating him the same as anyone else," said Williams.

"I give all my opponents the same respect. Of course Brett Kimmorley is a gun halfback but I'm more worried about me than him."

Williams received the call-up two days after South Sydney's 52-6 thrashing of North Sydney in Premier League.

His parents Lee and Wilfred Williams - who played for Easts, Wests and St George from 1985 to 1987 - will make the trip from Wagga Wagga to Aussie Stadium to watch their son play against the likes of Kimmorley and David Peachey.

Williams knows it will be tough but he's been told the quality players on the field makes it easier in the top grade.

"People have always told me it's easier as you get up the grades," he said.

"I don't know yet because I haven't played first grade but I find it easier playing Premier League than (Jersey) Flegg because you've got better players around you.

"The experienced blokes tell me that once you get up to first grade it's a bit easier so I'll find out on Saturday night."

Williams is best known for kicking a 30m field goal for Sydney Roosters to secure a thrilling 23-22 victory over Nathan Brown's St George Illawarra outfit in the 2002 Jersey Flegg grand final.

"I've moved on from that now - it was only Flegg," said Williams, who played alongside Greg Bird and Brett Seymour in the 2001 Australian Schoolboys side.

If his olds go to Aussie Stadium, they won't see much of him...

I'm more worried about the fact that his parents represented Easts, Wests and St George. What's that say about his mother?

Joey Williams finally plays first grade eh?

I remember when he was at my School. f**k, everyone worshipped the bloke. Even the teachers. He was damned good, but he was no Brett Kimmorley that's for sure.

Yes, he seems to have a fairly high opinion of himself already doesn't he?

Hopefully Noddy will show him that it's not quite as easy as he thinks.

Any news on this kid. Souths belted Norths in PL last week by 50+ (Norths coming last, SS mid table).
Unknowns often come up with a big first game, particularly hard to predict their ability.
We need to smash this souths side early.

I thought ShireShark played soccer? What's he doing playing PL footy? And how does he find the time to fit in footy, soccer and Northies into a weekend?

The forwards will be all that matters in this game. If we get the upper hand Noddy dominates. If we don't this kid makes a name for himself. I'll back us.

We just need the forwards to aim up and dominate the ruck area with some quick play-the-balls, which will allow Kimmorley get the ball out to our speed men...

Yeah there not such a big deal in marking opposing half backs....

If the forwards do they're job then BK stands out.

Simple!

My main pastime is typical of a young athlete: bending my elbow at the pub

Downing schooies and chasing chicks. An integral part of any elite athlete's training program. I know it's in mine...

Yep.

He's a good player with a lot of potential. Bit of an ego problem and a ball hog, but has a nice passing and kicking game. A schoolboy prodigy, but that don't mean bugger all now he's in firsts.
