Williams not worrying about Kimmorley
25 May 2004
South Sydney's Joe Williams means no disrespect to Cronulla captain Brett Kimmorley when he says he hasn't even thought about marking the former Test halfback in Saturday night's NRL clash at Toyota Park.
Williams, 20, will make his first grade debut this weekend at the expense of Willie Peters, who's been axed following the Rabbitohs' 26-12 loss to fellow cellar dwellers NZ Warriors on Sunday.
"No disrespect to Brett but I'll just be treating him the same as anyone else," said Williams.
"I give all my opponents the same respect. Of course Brett Kimmorley is a gun halfback but I'm more worried about me than him."
Williams received the call-up two days after South Sydney's 52-6 thrashing of North Sydney in Premier League.
His parents Lee and Wilfred Williams - who played for Easts, Wests and St George from 1985 to 1987 - will make the trip from Wagga Wagga to Aussie Stadium to watch their son play against the likes of Kimmorley and David Peachey.
Williams knows it will be tough but he's been told the quality players on the field makes it easier in the top grade.
"People have always told me it's easier as you get up the grades," he said.
"I don't know yet because I haven't played first grade but I find it easier playing Premier League than (Jersey) Flegg because you've got better players around you.
"The experienced blokes tell me that once you get up to first grade it's a bit easier so I'll find out on Saturday night."
Williams is best known for kicking a 30m field goal for Sydney Roosters to secure a thrilling 23-22 victory over Nathan Brown's St George Illawarra outfit in the 2002 Jersey Flegg grand final.
"I've moved on from that now - it was only Flegg," said Williams, who played alongside Greg Bird and Brett Seymour in the 2001 Australian Schoolboys side.

If his olds go to Aussie Stadium, they won't see much of him...
