Why does Queensland Rail care if I am male or female?

I recently bought some tickets for a long distance train. My elderly father does not like catching planes anymore and wanted to go to sister’s 50th wedding anniversary, in Townsville so wanted to catch a train. I had never been on a Queensland long distance train so thought hey why not.
Why buying the tickets online, I was amazed and bemused that I could not buy tickets unless I informed them wether I was male or female.
Seriously what difference does it make?
Can anyway explain why Queensland Rail cares if I am male or female?

Maybe they give priority single seats to females so they don't have to sit with guys they don't know who get drunk and then try and crack onto them

Was it for a seat or a berth in a shared sleeping car? I haven't worked for them for years but on the Sunlander they used to let you buy a ticket in a 2 or 3 berth sleeping car. The bunks would fold out from the seat. Maybe it was to try and keep single sex cabins.

Did not matter what seat, sleeper or not, you do not get that far, without answer that first. Having travelled by plane and rail in other countries I have never been asked what genitals were before...

Just Adult or child.

Maybe, the drunk, theory or research, I can only imagine what a Norwegian would think....being one of the first to allow women to vote in the 1800s.

Well I know who Phar Lap and Bradman are...so I passed.

I agree. But someone in IT decided it was a cool thing to ask. Probably supports AFL.

I think Australia had women voting before Norway.

I doubt that you could buy a plane ticket without giving gender - or boarding the plan without it
The train ticketing system could be based on an airline system

They do it so that they can sell their advertising space to sponsors with more data. They'll say 63% of travelers are female and target cosmetics companies or whatever to advertise on anything related to the train.

Fairly obvious I would have though.

That's where you're wrong, most are doing it, just a bit more subtly.

For example, with most airlines you're usually forced to choose Mr, Mrs or Ms. So with that, they're essentially asking your gender.
