Why don't these incompetant painted on eyes referees do their job consistently correct?
Calling players by their first name and mate is very unprofessional. All players should be address as the number on thier back...thats it. You are not his mate or coach.
Coaching and warning the elite players not to commit a penalty and not to stand offside is very unprofessional. Are they the referee or the coach on the field ?
A good referee should be heard but never noticed or remember for any on the field calls.
Most of these referees just couldn't make it playing the game and end up wanting the attention on the field as a inconsistent, unprofessional referee.
I've often wondered why they call out to tell a player he's offside. Let him make the tackle and penalise him if he can't get onside himself.
Referees have been calling out players for years, even from the 80s. This is not a new development that's only occurred under the NRL. Referees have been taught to do this for over 30 years. It to allow the game to flow and not end up in a penalty goal contest like Rugby Union does. This wasn't league pressure, this was referees doing this.Because they are under pressure by the NRL to let the game flow. No point having a go at the refs when they are only doing what their boss tells them to do. Their life would be a heck of a lot easier if they were allowed to ref to the rules only!
As for only calling numbers rather than names - well this changed because players responded to their names better than a number - especially if they weren't wearing a consistent number on the field. The best referees are not authoritarian or power drunk, but those working with the players to ensure the game is played by the rules through engagement.
As for your last comment @2010Dragons, that's extremely typical of a fan who knows nothing about the game. Referees know more about the game, it's history, than most of the players, management or fans will ever know. They are not wanting attention - they are doing an extremely difficult job where they are constantly under the microscope and blamed because teams play poorly.
