Why don't we ever "raid" Union?

They never gave any of the money or assets back. The game remained banned in schools and they were restricted to the number of players they could have. It wasn't even allowed to be called Rugby League until the 90s ffs. Its a credit to the strength of French Rugby League that they could battle the war of attrition Union was waging on them for so long.
People who make the argument that league continued in France after Vichy are just ignorant or union trolls

league in under five years of being formed had overtaken rugby union in France

the game never recovered from the banning

the only upside is union in France is paying wages nobody else can afford so it’s sending other union clubs broke

The challenge. Regardless of the status of RL outside of Australia, the NRL houses some of the best Rugby talent in the world and as it's brand grows, the lure of challenging yourself in that environment is very appealing.
Won't happen the movement of top class union players moving to league since 1995 has virtually dried up.

Imagine how good Kyle Flanagan would look in a Waratahs jersey. Or whoever their feeder club is, probably more realistic.

Anyways make it happen boys!

Eventually it will

comes down to the nrl salary cap vs wages in France

if the clubs didn’t take so much money this time the salary cap would be 15 million

the days of nrl players earning 2 to 3 million pa aren’t far off that’s when it becomes attractive for union “stars” to come over

f**king what? It was union literally teaming up with Nazis to ban the game and take all it's assets. "Bad administration" f**king read up mate.
Union has done terrible things to league in France. However the game thrived in the 1950s playing before big international crowds in the large cities. Puig Aubert was even chosrn as L'Equipe sportsman of thd year a very prestigIous award still running today.
However there were decisions made in the 70s that have had a negative affect.
One was the agreement with union in about 1972 to not poach each others players. This affected league more.
Two and probably the biggest blunder was deciding to reject TV coverage of their club game as it would affect crowds thus nullifying its potential growth.
Also we had the 1981 championship final abandoned after a short time due to a massive brawl which brought huge negativity from the media to the game.

No Vichy banning league takes over from union and union ends up a tiny sport

Vichy allowed union to regroup and prosper

What does it matter exactly? Most people understood they signed for money and accepted that, but with Suualii that notion is not accepted and people are treating him like he’s committed high treason and should be locked up

There's people in league who were heralding him as the next immortal before he ever played 1st grade who are upset. They're acting like the jilted lover who now wants to burn down the house

For me he's been solid and above average for his age and development but nothing spectacular. I've said previously there's other players I enjoy watching more than him who haven't had commentators blowing their load over

Here's an interesting take.. for the next year and a half union guys will be watching League...
They'll be confused by the lack of penalty goals and field goals. "These league players don't even set up for field goals - the thugs try and score tries"

Ahh nazis lol. Funny reading I'll have to look into it. Gives me another reason to hate RU.

I'll go 50/50 in Gould's camp. He can play out the year if he wants to but he shouldn't be playing any rep football. He can do that for the Wallabies in 2024.

Nothing to fear about the English Rugby Union teams most are in serious financial striff.
2 are bankrupt so far and they have a total 500 Million pound in debt.

Back in the day English union would ban for life any Union player that dared to trial for a RL club. We had a number of players back then that would be in the program as A.N.Other!
Absolute scum sport who deserve to burn. Clubs going broke in UK, their demise in Australia, and hopefully NZ one day is very sweet to watch for English RL fans who have put up with 100 years of white anting, open hostility and criticism of our sport from them and their southern union friendly media.

Average losses per club 5 million pounds pa

trying to compete with French union bankrupted them

they’ve just cut their salary cap so for the first time the nrl salary cap beats it

Because he hasn't played Origin he's unproven? Let's not act like he's a run-of-the-mill outside back, he's the best young player in the game and has a history in RU already.

If paying $1.6m is going to send the RA broke, their bread is already buttered so may as well throw a hail mary or two.
I'd argue he is unproven. He has lots still to work on in his game and absolute superstars of the past were well in front of him when they were age 19. Folau, Inglis, Benji to name a few off the top of my head.

Rugby league was only established in France in 1934 when rugby international Jean Galia helped introduce it after watching a Test between Australia and England played in Paris in 1933. The game prospered, especially in southern France.

When the Nazis defeated France and set up the Vichy Government, the Vichy Government literally outlawed rugby league. Marshall Petain who lead the Vichy Government helped to implement the legislation, and with the French Rugby Union';s assistance, the legislation which banned all professional sport, was used almost only against rugby league.

Due to this happening, many rugby league clubs overnight converted to rugby union clubs, and have remained union clubs ever since. All funds as well as grounds and equipment belonging to the French Rugby League Federation were confiscated and handed over to rugby union. Players either had to play union, play another non-professional sport, or retire. Of all the money, grounds and equipment confiscated from the French RL during the war, nothing has ever been returned.

Forget the 15 man game, Rugby 7s is where the NRL and NRLW should be targeting

Young athletes with plenty of tomorrows and not many bad habits drilled in

Only have to look at how well Lachlan Miller is going to see there could be big benefits
Good call, the other bonus is that the salaries in 7's aren't that high

This is all laughable, baby stuff from messers Gould, Kent, McLennan and anyone else who is having a sook about the whole Suaalii situation.

f**k me. If our game is such a good product (and it is) stop sooking about people who change codes. If they want to go play union, good for them. Our game didn't suffer when Israel Folau f**ked off. It won't suffer when Joseph Suaalii f**ks off. Gus Gould, the big f**king goose that he is, just keeps getting worse. Every time Suaalii plays is promotion for union!?! Please. For a start, I watch both. It's possible. And no one is choosing codes based on one player. Then old Kenty boy attempts to besmirch the chairman of Rugby Australia by saying he's never heard of him, that he's leveraging league's popularity by signing Suaalii (WTF) and he's done a clandestine deal that he didn't want league people to know about (double WTF, like that's not something league clubs do every year?!?)

It's so pathetic to watch grown men sook and fight over such a silly issue. Saying don't let the door hit you on the arse, Paul Kent telling someone to grow up and be a man about it (irony)...it's just laughable.

Yeh dckheds like Kent and Gould want us to treat Sualli the same way Union has treat its players in the past when the wanted to try League. We condemn them for it yet these dcks want us to behave the same way.

Its professional sport FFS, players are entitled to do whatever they like. Its a shame we are losing him, and his talent wasted in an inferior game, but it wont make a jot of difference to the NRL or Kangaroos.

Re free publicity our dckehad ARLC chairman and journos are the ones giving union all the publicity in the world with their inane rantings and snide comments.

Established 1934
By 1939 had surpassed union

pretty similar to the establishment of rugby league in Australia and how it wiped union off the map

On the one hand it's a pity that he's going to Yawnion. On the other hand I'm glad he's leaving the Roosters, so he can go and try to help the Wallabies win something of note for the first time in 20 years lol... I don't think he's that special in league but apparently a gun at Yawnion.
