PARRAMATTA’S shock loss to Cronulla might have brought a smirk to the face of one self-described `Parramatta boy’.
Twenty-two-year-old Broderick Wright left his hometown club this year to join Cronulla after many years in the blue and gold.
Wright would have loved to have been part of the Sharks team on Saturday, but has found life hard at his new club. The grand final standby for Nathan Cayless has been playing NSW Cup and been 18th man for several NRL clashes.
Yet he doesn’t regret the decision. Wright saw Cronulla as a chance to secure regular first grade appearances.
``It’s up for grabs really,’’ Wright said.
``There’s a spot there if I want to put in and take it. That’s sort of the goal this year, hold down a spot in first grade in the top 17.’’
Parramatta offered Wright a three-year contract, but he opted for two years at the Sharks.
For a bloke who grew up only a few streets from his home ground of Richie Benaud Oval, North Parramatta, it was a tough call.
``It was a very long and drawn-out decision because of how loyal I was to the club and how long I’d been here,’’ he said. ``It was tough at the time but one I had to make to further my career.’’
Wright played 12 games for the Eels last year, but the Sharks were a chance to play first grade consistently.
``I sort of did my apprenticeship here and they’ve still got a great forward pack and bought really well with big name forwards.
``I just thought in terms of my career, in getting regular first grade games, my best option was to go to the Sharks.’’
