Why the Panic!

Actually I expect us to win the comp. I just wish those in charge (and supporters such as yourself who embrace mediocrity) had the same expectations of the club.
So if we dont expect to win the comp every year , we should be hoping we will be in the top 4 ..... Look at the Storm how long have the been on top ? Im sure they would not accept our poor form since 2010 ....

Interesting that some contend we are doing far better than we would have ever hoped for and that we have actually over achieved. That being the case I wonder if they think the following scenario would be acceptable at the beginning of and during the season.
  1. The players believed that they couldn't win or they were told they couldn't win the comp before a ball was kicked off?
  2. The players were told that the coach was so pitiful that regardless of what they did they couldn't win the comp?
  3. The players were told that they needed to buy into Mary's grand plan and make it look a winner but in the end it won't work and there are no alternate solutions and the whole thing will just fall apart like 2015 but if we can just make the semis that will be fantastic.
  4. After they got to the top 2 on the ladder for a while they were told "don't get disillusioned boys but we don't belong here nor will we stay here, it just an aberration and no matter what you do you can't win the comp nor should you expect to".
  5. After they fell to 4th place on the ladder point 3 was re-iterrrated to them and told "yep that's all ok, it was part of the grand plan and we are all well within our KPI's".
  6. After last game points 4 & 5 were re-iterrated to them and they were told " Yep no problems we're all still ok and most of the fans are ok with it because they did't expect very much anyway". Then after they got the tick of approval they were also told "You know the really good thing about all this is that those fans that do complain and say they deserve better and believe that we should actually do something like be a real contender, will be set upon by the people who actually believe we are getting better, so we don't have to make any excuses they will do it for us".
  7. Don't worry boys we will get extensions and pay increases and if we piss a few good players off along the way so be it. The fans will quickly turn on them and they will be soon forgotten. In actual fact it doesn't pay to be too high profile so best we all fly under the radar a bit.
Whilst there is certainly some poetic licence in the above I am sure the people that predicted the season would fall apart find no solace in any of it but those that think we have overachieved will find the points galling and say that is not what we think should happen but in a funny sort of a way it is not too far from what actually has transpired.
If anybody says that point 1 is ridiculous and that could never happen then please don't tell me that we have overachieved as I expect our team to have a winning culture and I will make my own assessment of how we went at the end of the season rather than people telling me after 10 rounds or half way through.

I think your whole post is a very feasible insight into our diabolical predicament.
One minor correction/addition.
Point 3. should include 2016 as well as 2015.
So now we are confronted with 3 years during which good starts collapsed into the abyss...with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Good read OT. My take is that yes, we have overachieved given off season predictions. What I can't fathom is that with the start we had why the mindset in the club isn't 'hey, we are genuine Top 4 contenders now so let's not drop our standards'. But now it seems we are back to accepting that we were good while it lasted. The club as a whole has a lot to answer for.
