FORMER Widnes rugby league player and now Taree resident Brian Atherton hopes to organise a function in Taree when his old club arrives for a camp in Forster-Tuncurry next month.
Atherton, who has been pivotal in numerous fund raising dinners held at Taree Leagues and Sports Club over the years, is confident his former club will be able to break into their itinerary to come to Taree.
The Widnes squad will be in the Great Lakes preparing for the World Sevens to be played in Sydney.
Robert Relf, who started playing rugby league in Gloucester before moving to Canterbury and then North Queensland, now plays for Widnes in the English Super League. Widnes will also play a trial game against West Tigers at Tuncurry on Saturday January 31.
This will be the first time an NRL side has played a match at Forster-Tuncurry.
