Will Chambers

I have watched Will Chambers over the past couple of weeks trying to determine if he is ready, I think he has the ability, but I am starting to doubt that he should be in firsts.

I have seen him in full flight chasing down a kick and the boy is very fast. But I have also seen him offer some very soft defence against the Broncos. If Hodges was there he would have cut him wide open.

Bellamy is a fan and believes the kid, and he will make it, but I think it is a bit early and we should blood Dane Nielsen into the side as Origin and City Country will take a number of players.

I haven't heard much about him, except that he did some really good stuff last year with the Sharkies.

Any opinions?

There is another thread on this...Chambers is still very much rookie material.

His defence needs a lot of work and he is quick...he tends to stand off the attacker and tackle as they take the outside.

He needs to tackle them head on where possible..

Chambers defense is always been a problem, but you have to persist with him for another three or four games at least. He played a great game in the world club challenge. he has talent, heaps of talent, but also like every young bloke he has many flaws in his game.

In Wizard cup he had a tendency to do something great and then show no interest for 20 minutes. Basically he has concentration issues. His former coach at Norths, Kevin Carmichael, didnt rate him because he would go mssing during games and have no interest at training. If his team was on the front foot and giving him space he would be great. But, if it was tight, he wouldnt put in work to get them out of trouble.

he also is playing on his wrong side. his best asset is a big left palm that would rival Inglis's right palm. he used it all the time to break the line in Wizard Cup but i havnt seen him do it once in the NRL yet.

Good summary...he seems to have potential and is playing a good standard. All teams will target him this year and this is where he is going to have to prove that he has the defensive ability to succeed.

Ands you wont see it much while he's playing left centre. Issy leaving should allow him to go to the side that suits him better.

Massive liability in defensive line atm. Seems to have the habit of running out of the line, and missing every single tackle that he needs to make.

Experience is what he needs to help solve this. But atm, seriously, just stay on your line ffs!

Attack wise he's also struggling to find his feet. He handling has been poor, and he has a tendency to stop-start running, and head back in field, which means he lacks confidence to take the line on. He'll learn, but jeez - he's no Matt King, and certainly he's know Folau or Slater or Inglis...yet.

I've yet to seen him open up on a line break, nor do anything particularly spectacular. THere is a chance he'll be a dud - unless he rips in and trains hard, and does not take it for granted. He's lucky McDougal is out for the season - or else Bellamy might have been tempted to put some more pressure on him for a starting spot. Geyer might not be too far away also.
