Will Penrith do a 'Newcastle'

Let's face it, Manly were the better side in 97 and Parra were the better side in 01.
I believe the reason we won those two grandfinals is because players will put in a lot more when playing for their local areas than 'mercenaries' will produce for the money.
Easts are the best football side, but I think Penrith will put their bodies on the line for their home town, just like Newcastle boys do in similar circumstances.

Great point Roopy.

I happened to mention that idea at work today. We were disucssing the game and we were all pretty confident that the Roosters were too good for Penrith.

I then said you cant forget the Newcastle factor, one of our many resident Bulldogs supporters pipped up, "Newcastle factor?" ( Canterbury supporters in case you havent notice have the market cornered in every way with regards to history and pride....pfft. ) I said, yeah, a team that nobody thinks can win, gets up with effort and passion.

Needless to say it was dismissed outright, but that is what i get for living in Sydney.

I gotta disagree. If the team is good enough to get to the Grand Final, then local players or not won't make a difference. AS DMC said, what about the Warriors?? They played the GF last year against the Roosters, most of them are Kiwis, yet they lost. Your theory has no real back-up.

As for the Knights showing this passion, well where is it when Joey isn't there?? And other teams have won when they were the underdogs... it isn't just a Newcastle thing

I don't know if Penrith did a Newcastle, or if Newcastle has been doing a Penrith over the years.
Both teams have now won the title twice, and all four wins have been massive upsets sprung by local boys playing with passion.

Anyway, the highlight of the game for me was seeing Chris Walker stuff up several times to seal the win for the Panthers. Walker embodies all that was wrong about the possibility of the Roosters winning this year, and it is very fitting that his obvious faults were what cost them any chance of comming back late in the game - brilliant.

I don't know about walker's game, but how bad was "Count"? Where the hell was Wing all night? And can't the NRL suspend Morley from Mad Monday?

Well people have doubted the 'Newcastle factor' trend all week - people have said that the Roosters would win comfortably and that the Panthers were just there because someone had to play the Roosters.

How wrong people were. I never lost confidence in the Panthers - I tipped them, my heart was with them, and importantly I could see they weren't carrying any pressure of performing.

They just went out there and played like they always play - they did the simple things right, and managed to keep the Roosters to just 6 points - that try came about because of a rare Panther's mistake.

It says a lot about the Knights actually - we win when we hold the ball - I hope our boys saw the game last night and had pen and paper ready because I've been trying to tell them for years and still no changes. Everyone alluded to it after the GF last night - the Panthers controlled the football. The fact the only Roosters try came about because of a mistake by Penrith only accentuates that when you control the football, even against the Roosters, you lift your chances of winning tremendously.

As for the notion of winning a Grand Final as 'fairytale victors' - many of the news stations were reporting it as a new concept, beating the massive favourites. How quickly they forget just two years ago, and then another 6 years ago when Newcastle were massively massive (great terminology) underdogs - given no hope of winning - but we won.

The Knights have won 2/2 in GFs, Penrith have won 2/2 in the last 12 years (had they made a Grand Final prior to 1991?) - it says a lot about the underdog ability to never be phased by the reputation and form of their opponent.

It was a win for Penrith, but also a win for Newcastle fans like me - I love the underdog - I'm right there celebrating with the Panthers.

Penrith lost in 1990 to the Raiders.

There you go - cheers Wedge.
It says a lot about the Knights then - two wins, against two dominant sides, from two Grand Final appearances.

In any case two wins from three GFs for Penrith is pretty good. Importantly coming from wooden-spooners to Minor and Major Premiers in two years is commendable, highly commendable actually.

Perhaps there is hope for Souths afterall. ;-)
