St George Illawarra and the Bulldogs were in damage control yesterday after off-field incidents at the weekend.
Bulldogs forward Brad Morrin was fined $5000 by the club following an incident with a passing motorist outside the Bulldogs' Melbourne hotel early on Sunday after their game with the Storm. Morrin said he was trying to hitch a ride to get some food about 3am on Sunday before the misunderstanding with the motorist.
"A car stopped in front of me and I opened the back door to ask the driver if I could get a lift," Morrin said yesterday. "He got out of his car and looked upset. I explained I thought he had stopped to give me a lift and I apologised for alarming him.
"I apologise to my teammates, club officials, sponsors, Bulldogs fans and the NRL for the embarrassment this has caused them. I fully accept the punishment handed down by the club."
The incident was witnessed by a police officer, who believed Morrin was drunk, and the player was detained in a police cell for four hours before being released, which is standard practice in Victoria for anyone found to be drunk in a public place.
Dragons second-rower Willie Manu was one of three people arrested after an altercation at a Wollongong nightclub on Sunday night.
Manu spent the night in jail, and could face assault charges, with Dragons chief executive Peter Doust saying the club already had launched its own investigation.
