Willie Mason: Players Should Strike for More Money - "Without us, there is no game"

Fairfax Publications: 25/03/07 - Willie Mason

"IT'S TIME for the players to make a stand about the salary cap, and if that means going on strike, well, I'm in. And to really make a point, I vote we strike during the State of Origin series.
I don't say that lightly. My frustration is shared by other players. We're filthy that some of our best players - Timana Tahu is the latest - are being lost to rugby union while our sport's up-and-comers are being paid bugger all even though they train as hard as professionals.
This isn't about player greed. I know I'm well paid but I am prepared to make a stand that may benefit a future generation of players.
What really gets to me is the fact rugby league has rarely been in a stronger position. The NRL has just signed a $90 million sponsorship deal with Telstra and it makes millions from the State of Origin and electronic media rights - and yet the salary cap has barely moved over the past few years.
It is about time we saw exactly how much the game earns and we received a bigger slice of the action.
The Rugby League Professionals Association, our players union, is weak and does nothing for the players. Yet, how can we expect the RLPA to represent our best interests when it is partially funded by the NRL? That money has compromised our union . . . how can we expect 100 per cent support?
I saw how strong the NFL players' union was when I went to New York for a trial last year. It put the players first, down to the number of hours they could train each day. The AFL players association also has a good say in the running of their game.
The RLPA's relationship with the NRL leaves us with one weapon - to strike. A players' strike during origin would send a clear and powerful message. It would show we can't be walked over. If it takes a giant stand for the greater good, for the next generation, I'm prepared to do it and I know the players would support me.
Guys like Darren Lockyer and Andrew Johns are near the end of their careers. They have tried for years to do something about this and have got nowhere. I want results.
There needs to be more money for up-and-coming players because the minimum wage is too low. It's wrong that there are blokes who train as hard as I do at the Bulldogs but they get paid stuff all for their hard work. While I acknowledge the effort is worth it for the opportunities a great club like Canterbury can provide, the pay is unfair if you're a fringe first-grader or you play premier league.
We must stop rugby union from poaching our best talent. How can the NRL consider it good business to allow the best players to go to rugby? Rugby union was a game no one gave a toss about until Lote Tuqiri, Wendell Sailor and Mat Rogers were allowed to defect.
Now rugby has recruited Timana Tahu, one of the best athletes I've seen, at his absolute peak and it hasn't done a thing to develop him.
Rugby has hit the panic button because it doesn't have anyone coming through the ranks.
A strike wouldn't be good for the game and I stress it's a last resort. But to do it when it would hurt the game most - during origin - is the only way the players can be heard.
It would prove that without us there is no game."

The NRL or News LTD should give back a higher percentage of what they earn from RL to the Clubs. I hope NEWS Ltd does not use the salary cap to try and increase its already big profits, becasue it is looking that way.

What a brainiac, real Australian captain material. If he keeps it up he could get a gig on the footy show. Oh wait....

Sounds like his trip to the USA went well by the amount of dribble coming out of his mouth...but I do agree that up and coming players could be paid a little more ??.

Way to try and disguise your own greed by masquerading as the savior and rallying for the cause of the young players. You're a regular gaurdian angel Willy :sarcasm:

If the younger players need to be paid more then that's fair enough, but it should be done in a way that doesn't benefit every other player that gets paid more than enough. The fact that he made a point of mentioning this wasn't about player greed just confirmed to me that's exactly what it is. If you want to strike then f**k off but i doubt you'll have many friends joining you.

Go ahead and strike. I'll be just as happy walking up the road and watching Wyong take on Lakes United.

I think Willie is spot on with his assessment and we should support him.

he's trying to bring some accountability to the games administrators and so long as everyone here continues to ridicule him, then don't complain when we continue to lose talent to the ESL and Rugby.

IMO, the salary cap should be raised to $5 million as a starting point and evenetually get it up to around $8 million per year within five years.

I am happy to agree with you if this if the general consensus of all players in the NRL but his argument does not support this...if players want to go to UK or union for big money then so be it but his article reeks of self centred arrogance.

Raising the cap would not solve it because union will just raise theirs further and players would still defect over to rival codes.

Strike? Good stuff Willie.

I guess we (the fans), can wait for a few weeks whilst you (the players) go on strike for more pay.

Then when you decide to come back, we will be more than happy to put our hands even deeper into our pockets to pay for the price rises in tickets, merchandise and PayTv, that will ultimately pay for your salary gains.

Then again, how about you get pharked. :p

I love watching him play, but Mason should stick his nose out of anything to do with things outside the field. Rather than say 'strike' couldn't he have said the players should be pushing the NRL to keep them in the game?

Piss off Mason you dumb tool. The idiot has no idea what he's talking about. The removal of the salary cap would send about half a dozen clubs bankrupt within a few years.

I'm wondering if the NRL shouldn't get on the front foot with this one:
Offer to pay the equivalent of 2% of Willie's salary to his Junior Rugby League team, & see if he offers to match it.

I think all players who reach a 'Salary threshold' (say $200K) should be encouraged to support the Junior League Club that supported them. The NRL would be obliged to match it.

How many JRL Clubs could do with an extra $8k per year to try & fight off AFL & Football?

The NRL could call it their "Grassroots Contribution".

At $5 million per year across the top 25, you get an average wage of 200k and I think you will find the majority of players would support him, they just don't want to run foul of the NRL or News Limited so they keep their mouth shut but would be happy to benefit if Willie's outspoken ways led to them getting a pay increase.

At $5 million per year, your elite players can piad a figure closer to their true value to the game.

If Rugby and AFL players can earn upwards of 800kper year, then why not League players? With more money coming from nine, Telstra, TAB, why shouldn't the players benefit?
