Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz 2017.
NGL, I think I like this more than the pricier 2016 Blue Eyed Boy, although I'm sure that's a vintage thing because that's the first time I've thought that.
Huge nose, as you expect from both South Australia and Mollydooker. Classic McLaren Vale, stewy plums and blue/black berries liquorice and allspice. The mouth is the same with the addition of a huge whack of chocolate from the oak; there's that classic SA simplicity despite complexity in that it's exactly what you expect, but you kind of want that.
The tannin is very present which I think is the thing I enjoy more than the '16 Blue Eyed Boy, which lacks that. Grippy and gravelly on the back, almost Gigondas-like, which makes the high alcohol and massively ripe fruit seem less hot and heavy.
I think the thing I like most about the Marquis' is the way they unashamedly embrace the stereotype of over the top Australian reds, but they make the wines so well they normally don't feel overcooked or sweetly insipid like so many poorer South Aussie reds.
