Syrah is a tricky one for Australia though. I do think that a place like Tassie could do it well. For a micro-climate, Macedon does very good Shiraz that could be called Syrah.

Clonakilla do a brilliant Syrah. Nick Glaetzer does one in Tassie as well. There a a lot that could be labelled Syrah from Canberra and Victoria, especially the Yarra, Pyrenees, Beechworth, Macedon and Alpine Valleys. I think you could label all Oakridges and Dalwhinnies stuff syrah quite comfortably for example.

I decided to take a couple of big reds to the snow...tonight, a 2005 Chateaux Montus Madiran. 100% tannat. Big it is!

2010 Wynns Black Label Shiraz...some of the douchier writers have panned this as a cheapening of the brand. All I can say is, typical of the writer or two that I am thinking of, I don't think they even tasted the stuff. Ripping juice

Oh jeez...lol.

Grant Burge Cameron Vale is a fave of mine...2009 especially. They didn't make the $70 Shadrach in 2009, all the fruit was declassified and went into this. It's a belter

Nugan Estate. Not sure exact price off the top of my head. Coonawarra, very nice

Penley Estate Phoenix. Another Coonawarra, 17-21 depending

Turners Crossing. Bendigo fruit, about $17, awesome wine.

Ringbolt Cabernet. Margaret River, about 19 off the top of my head. 2008 was average, but if they have 09 or 10 on the shelf they'll be very good.

Brands Blockers. One of the best under 25 IMO, Coonwarra

Barwang Cab Save. Grown just up the road from me around Yass, one of my absolute favourites.

Blue Pyrenees. About 17 bucks, just awesome value and keeps very well too. Pyrenees, Victoria.

I'm sure there are loads more I've forgotten too

gonna give one of these a go tonight

expect full report sunday morning

Bit of expanding on that, before I crack into the Jack with brother... it's actually quite Burgundian. Maybe a bit more fruit up front than a Burgundy but definitely reminds me of a Vergelesses. It's got that sappy, stemmy whole bunch character behind the fruit and spice from the oak. Really good stuff, good value too (for a Pinot anyway) at about $40.

I do agree Twiz, but the cheapest Cab I've got on me is $65, not going to quaff that guy...

And I'm a dole bludger now too. Casks don't count though, unless its Stanley Moselle.

Wolf Blass Yellow Label is on for $11, not a bad drop by any means. Otherwise I think the Thorn Clarke Sandpiper is $14, it's pretty handy from memory. The Casillero del Diablo from Chile is another tasty one, should be about $14 as well

St Hallett Gamekeepers, Loom Long Yarn Shiraz, the old Stump Jump GSM, Casillero Malbec or Carmenere, Mt Pleasant Phillip Shiraz, Pikes Red Mullet, Metala...there's quite a lot!

I dunno what that stores import range is, but there is a very nice Nero d'Avola from Sicily, by Piana del Sole that is sub 15 I believe. Aradon Rioja is about $9 and it's a belter quaffer IMO. And Dorio Montepulciano, same deal.
