Wolfman may get the punt

WINGER David Williams was yesterday named to debut in Australia's World Cup side to play PNG this weekend - but there are no guarantees he will be retained by the premiers Manly.

The Daily Telegraph understands Williams' manager David Riolo will next week hold contract negotiations with Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler.

Williams is on a modest $50,000 base contract this year with Manly preparing to give him a considerable pay increase when his deal expires at the end of next season.

But with salary cap issues, Manly privately claim they will not be rail-roaded into paying Williams a massive contract in the vicinity of $250,000 a season.

If Williams asks for such a contract, he may well be told to look elsewhere.

Manly chief executive Grant Mayer would not discuss the Williams negotiations but did say: "The club has five players off contract next year.

"David's selection in the Australian side only adds to the complexity of the entire situation."

When asked if he expected a contract upgrade, Williams said: "I certainly hope so. I'll look more into that after this (World Cup)."

Monas got the "punt" after asking for 240k.
No way Williams will get 250k at Manly. He can stay where he went from a reserve grader to a representative player, won a premiership, has all of his close mates or piss off to Souffs and turn into the next Shannon Hegarty.

he's got plenty of close mates at Parra also, in saying that if Manly want to keep Dave and no doubt they do, (why wouldn't they) than Manly will keep him, and tbh as much as I want him back, I wouldn't mind him staying at the club where his career has shot to stardom.

Laughable.

Where did the 240K figure come from? As Harold said, our halfback and captain at the time asked for 240K and "got the punt".

Williams won't ask for a figure anywhere near that - He will be a Sea Eagle in 09.

he's under contract for 09, so I can't see anyone disputing that and what would you know what he'd ask for??

He's under contract for 2009. I'd say 2010 we will look something similar to:-

01. Brett Stewart
02. David Williams
03. Steve Matai
04. Jamie Lyon
05. Michael Bani
06. Chris Bailey
07. Todd Carney
08. Josh Perry
09. Matt Ballin
10. Brent Kite
11. Anthony Watmough
12. Tony Williams
13. Glann Stewart

14. Heath Le'Strange
15. Jason King
16. Adam Cuthbertson
17. Glenn Hall

Cap won't fit Manly's wingers
Exclusive by Dean Ritchie

PREMIERS Manly are preparing to make the gut-wrenching decision to sack one of their Grand Final wing heroes -David Williams or three-try standout Michael Robertson.

Salary cap restrictions will prevent the Sea Eagles from paying Williams and Robertson the $200,000 a season they are asking when their contracts expire.

"Wolfman" Williams - one of the great characters of Manly's run to the title - is on the verge of a call-up to Australia's World Cup final side and Robertson scored three tries in Manly's historic Grand Final win last month.

Yet in a decision that will come as a shock to the Sea Eagles faithful, it seems only one of the pair will be in maroon and white by 2010.

Both wingers are off contract after next season and are asking for about $200,000 a season - a huge increase for Williams, now on a modest base salary of $50,000 plus bonuses.

Sources close to Manly say the club simply cannot afford to pay $400,000 for two wingers.

Williams and Robertson join Matt Orford, Heath L'Estrange and Glenn Hall as players coming off contract after 2009.

Player managers Steve Gillis, for Robertson, and David Riolo, for Williams, have already met Manly coach Des Hasler.

Gillis said the club had indicated they wanted to keep Robertson, who they see as a senior player.

"He can play fullback or wing and was close to winning the Clive Churchill Medal. I don't think he was too far away from selection in the Australian side. Michael is a marquee player."

Manly chief executive Grant Mayer was reluctant to discuss the chance that one of his star wingers could be lost to the club.

"No doubt we have some challenges ahead of us with the sal- ary cap," Mayer said. "We have had preliminary discussions with both managers.

"I'm sure in the next few weeks things will become a lot clearer. At this stage there is no firm offer on the table.

"Success on the field certainly complicates things for clubs.

"That is why it is very difficult for any club to win back-to-back premierships these days."

Williams was playing down his chances of replacing the injured Brent Tate against the Kiwis in Saturday's World Cup final.

"It's not the way you want to get a spot in the squad but that's football these days, it's probably the only way you usually get a spot," Williams said. "It's how I got a spot at the start of the season and if it happens, it happens."

They should re-sign Williams. Robertson can go and get his big pay check in England.

I think we'll re-sign both.

With Bell gone and no replacement signed we need as much backline depth as possible.

Neuman is no way near 1st grade material and the new Williams seems to be billed as a forward for 2009.

Typical media beat up.

I know as much as Mr Ritchie - sweet FA.

A winger with less than twenty NRL games under his belt with one Australian cap would not command 240K. Those types of figures are insane.

I doubt any club apart from the Roosters would be willing to pay him that kind of money, if this hogwash were actually true.
