There is some great ideas here.

What about affililiating each NRL CLub with an International side. Each side would come a week or two early and practice with the NRL side, do joint promotion. The NRL club would encourage its fans to get out and back their affiliate team.

Yet another very good idea.

ONE THING I FORGOT TO SAY IS I THINK WE NEED TO GET ALL THE SCHOOLS (especially public) INVOLVED

EG make it possible for students to buy tickets through their school or school footy team

also have visits to the schools by nrl players likely to be involved in the world cup

That's an area where in the past we've been very weak and both the RU and soccer have been very sharp.

For some of the lesser games it could be something like one adult with two under 16s at a very reduced price if not free.

Now is the time to start marketing for 2008 with the schools and junior clubs but I suspect most of the next four years or so will be spent arguing about the competition format and protecting the interets of the NRL and ESL clubs.

i agree

i think its much more important to worry about the marketing than the comp itself

marketing these days is so powerful that the PRODUCT usually becomes a by-product of the marketing

there are so many ads and catchlines that the rlif could come up with

in australia we could have

can the kangaroos do what the wallabies couldnt

etc etc

I love Griff's idea about Steve Waugh talking about his experiences and lots of other notable Aussie sportsmen who talk about their sport and then finish by marvelling at the sheer brilliance and domination of the Roos

Great ideas all round.

Yakstorm I like your idea about an information booklet in Newspapers to inform the public about matches etc. You could do a mailout to NRL CLub members as well.

Getting schools involved is a good idea too. But it is difficult. I wouldn't want loads of free tickets going around if it was going to compromise income streams. It is a fine balancing task. This thing needs money.

Griff- your ideas were amazing. I'd be grinning like a fool to see any advertising for international league- but the ideas you have there are great.

RU ads that caught my attention were the one with Italian girls ('Our men will impress you'). Ones that showed ordinary fans being excited about their sides chances.

The RLIF is in an amazing position to kick some dirt in the face of their critics, but they just need to focus.

I think it's important to find a balance between patriotic support of the 'Roos and convincing audiences that they're not shoe ins. Play up England, Wales, New Zealand, and Wales' chances- and put a positive spin on sides like PNG, Lebanon, and Russia- who have all improved in leaps and bounds.

I think the cup should be advertised with a name.

In America, all the RUWC adverts talked about the "Webb Ellis Cup."

Perhaps, to celebrate the centeneary, it should be the "Dally Messenger Cup" or the "Albert Baskerville Cup." Only prob is, the Baskerville trophy is currently awarded to NZ vs GB winner.

Does anyone else think "The Dally Messenger Centeneary Rugby League World Cup" would attract people better than "The Lincoln Financial Group Rugby League World Cup?"

Adding a name to the trophy is an interesting idea...however not sure how well it would go down... We really need to promote the fact that this is still the original trophy, which has been around since the 1954 World Cup.

Promote it as a symbol of pride, passion and everything great in Rugby League.

How about the "Kangaroo Cup?"

That would make it even funnier when the Roos don't win the WC in 2008. :)

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that some people called for the World Cup trophy to be named after Paul Barriere, then-President of the FFR XIII and "father" of the World Cup, but he declined the honour. Perhaps his family (I assume he is no longer alive) would now welcome the honour now that is awarded posthumously.

Interestingly if you look at old pictures, the ball shaped bit on top of the trophy used to have a French cockerel on top of it. Obviously it must have got knocked at some point between when it went missing and when it turned up again 20 years later at an Oldham rubbish tip.

It would be an excellent good news media story if in the lead up to the WC it is unveiled at a press conference with a new French cockerel on the top and renamed the Paul Barriere trophy.

I personally don't mind how the French Gual didn't return, as the new part on the top is acctually a picture of the globe, and if you see the trophy in real life you can see all the countries of the world on it, comes across abit more 'worldly'.

I do like the idea of it being named in honour of Paul Barriere, he did alot for the game, and it just highlights the modesty of the guy how he would decline such a presitigous honour as he didn't feel he was worthy.

Barriere for those who don't know what the guy who got the concept of the international Federation going (back when it acctually had alot more power) and also got the World Cup approved after nearly 10 years of French RL trying.

Paul Barriere trophy is a great idea.

I think we should also push the event as World Cup 10. Imply its long tradition.

It's actually World Cup XIII. Maybe they should call it the "Paul Barriere Cup Treize."

World Cups: 1954, 57, 60, 68, 70, 72, 75, 77, 85-88, 89-92, 95, and 2000.

The 2008 World Cup should be the biggest and most legitimate World Cup.

It should also be advertised as the smaller nations turn. For the USA, maybe they could say: "The wouldn't admit them in 1954. They didn't have a real chance to qualify in 2000. Now, it's their turn to shine."

They could promote the qualifiers as important. They could be shown on TV (unless Nine has the rights), and be made into a really big deal, almost as important as the actual cup.

How about an advert with images of the foreign nations saying,

'Theyve the cheek to come to our country and try and beat Australias most successful team, lets make sure they don't'

Just an idea to maybe make it like an invasion to try and finally beat the aussies after all these years.

Luckily Channel Neins television rights will up by that time, and any renegotiated deal with any channel will not include rights to the RLWC. It will be up ther RLIF to negotiate and get it right.
