I thought the Kiwis win over Oz might have been enough to keep them in second, nice to see it wasn’t.

Congrats on the move up England - the 2020 Kangaroos tour might have the # 1 ranking on the line too for a bit of extra spice.

Does anybody actually know how it is calculated? Given this year Australia has won one lost one, nz have won two lost two and England have won three lost one how do they figure those rankings for the top three?

They are getting better with these rankings. But I feel like this time, the emerging nations f***ed everything up. Here are some pre-Emerging nations results from this year, then the subsequent rankings.

Czech 64-10 Hungary
Rankings: Hungary #18, Czech #25

Greece 60-4 Malta
Rankings: Malta #16, Greece #19

How many games have they played in the last 4 years? How many games have they won in that time?

3 and 1. That’s my point....at the minute all they have to do is win one games to qualify for the next world cup, despite 6 other asia/pacific nations ranked higher than them.

That's a point. Cook Islands are obviously stronger than the other ones but they have yet to prove it. All they do is play the bigger teams and lose.

League rankings should always be taken with a grain of salt. Until they address the caliber of teams playing each other to earn ranking points, it wont be a true reflection of how good a team really is. A tier 3 team only needs to play weaker opposition to cruise up the rankings, a tier 2 team playing against top 10 opposition wont do as good and can drop below the tier 3 team. The system is flawed. They should make it that the ranking points you earn is dependent on the opposition you play. Play a team much higher than you and you beat them, you earn more points. Play a team equal or lower than you and beat them, you earn minimal points.

As flawed as the system is. A team who plays matches and loses them all, will STILL rise above those that don't play at all. This is what some Cooks fans need to realise. It seems they're only interested in playing a match when it's obligatory (WCQ) or someone else organises it.

Theres also the fact they continue to get overlooked by the NRL for the Pacific test series. When you are cash-strapped like they and many of the P.Is teams are, getting a free ride with the NRL backed Pacific tests series would be helpful, its money they dont have to worry about scrounging when organising a test.

I got this from the CIRL president ..["We have been arguing against the NRL who organises the Pacific Test only to be told in the last minute that we are not playing. ON A POSTIVE NOTE, we are quranteed a game 2019 so watch this space! "]

Edit to say: They should make it that the ranking points you earn is dependent on the opposition you play. Play a team much higher than you and you beat them, you earn more points, taking those points off the team you just beat. Play a team equal or lower than you and beat them, you earn minimal points.

Firstly the Emerging Nations WC was a great way for lower tier ranked teams across regions to be ranked

It has helped place Asia / Pacific nations in line with European nations

But size of result and which ranking team they played should have bearing on ranking also

But when Tier 2 nations dont play Tier 3 nations it causes issues

It does. If a team ranked 20 were to beat a team ranked 4 they'd jump a lot higher than if they were to beat a team ranked 25th.

But how does losing by 1pt or losing by 80 points work ?

Whole Cook Is have lost they have been competitive

I beleive not only who you play but also the size of the result, especillay when you lose

Eg we know a -1 to -19 result is pretty even contest and ranking system is ok for these games

But a -20 to -39 show push teams further down

And a -40 to -69 even more so

And -70 plus even more again

These sort of loss weight factor would push down the minnows down to lower tiers

In Europe we have about 5-6 tiers. Sometimes there is a big gap between tiers
