Would you take a punt on Julian ONeill?

Both Canberra and the Bulldogs have been in negotiations with North Queensland fullback Julian O'Neill but neither club is likely to sign him due to his previous misdemeanors so he may look to England where Hull has made him an attractive offer.

If your club were interested in O'Neill would you see it as a positive step or a backward step? His record has been clean for two years now so he may well have learned some valuable lessons.

It does appear that he has cleaned up his act and the guy can play. I do believe he would be an asset to a club but his contract would have to contain behavioural obligations and penalties to ensure he stays on track. Canberra, having so many young guys would benefit more than the dogs.

I wouldn't mind Canberra signing him because all our outside backs are pretty young.

Even with that in mind, i don't think the Raiders would sign him considering their poilicy in the past.

Thats true but I really think the club needs to do something drastic to revive their fortunes and if that means a policy shift then so be it. While having an abundance of youth is important experienced player may prove to be invaluable. We have a lot of raw talent but IMHO they have'nt progressed as well as they should have.

I would definitley take a chance on him. He hasnt done anything wrong for a couple of years and has shown himself to be a capable leader at the Cowboys.
Abillity wise I would rate him ahead of Craigie and we could reallty use his defense out wide.
Joel Monoghan, Jamal Lolesi and Sione Faumuina all have raw talent but no one to teach them the finer points of the game.

Matt Sing and Paul Mellor are off the market now, which only leaves Craigie, Oneil and Steven Hughes as centers on the market. For mine Oneil is the best of those.

According to 2GB and Phil Gould, Mellor re-signed with the Sharks and Sing will announce that he is off to the Cowboys during the week. Sing isnt a hundred percent but he is as good as gone.

Also higly likely are Macfadden to Parramatta (small chance ofSouths)and Joe Vagana to Canterbury.

Julian O'Neil went off the drink after the Dubbo incident. He has since got married and is a normal human being again. That was a different Julian O'Neil.

I wouldn't take a chance on O'Neil.............because it wouldn't be taking a chance, this guy should be snapped up quickly.

Cheers.

O'Niell's recovery is something to be admired.
Alcoholism can hit anybody and it's a disease which is very hard to shake off.
I'm surprised that Souths haven't been after him.

I had the displeasure of meeting Julian O'Neil's brother once and the old cliche 'instant arsehole, just add alcohol' could have been coined about him. Until he had a drink he wasn't a bad guy, but a complete idiot after sniffing a cork.
Some people should never drink.

Hi Roopy, Good to see the old handle back in place and great to see you here!

I've seen alcoholisn first hand and I agree with you totally. Some people simply cannot drink.
It's one of the worst drugs and does seem to have the same effect on all (usually male) family members.
Quite often, whole lives are destroyed and it's very hard to forgive the perpetrator.
If Julian O'Neil has kicked the habit (& 2 years isbarely enough) than he deserves praise.
