The other thread about WT possibly letting Gibbs, Fulton and Payten go at end of season had me thinking. How many of those we have let go since the GF in '05 have gone on to greater things or really burnt us by being irreplacable? The answer is not many.

2006
Pat Richards, John Wilson, Mark O’Neill, Matthew Rieck, Ray Cashmere

2007
Jamahl Lolesi, John Skandalis, Shane Elford, Anthiny Laffranci, Scott Prince, Sam Harris, Michael Crockett, Isaac de Gois, Rangi Chase

2008
Ben Galea, Daniel Fitzhenry, Paul Whatuira, Ben Jeffery, Jai Ayoub, Jarrad Saffy, Nick Youngquest, Luke Harlen

2009
Stuart Flanagan, Brett Hodgson, Ryan O’Hara, Ben Te’o, Matthew Head, Bronsson Harrison, Benson Tupou, Ben Shea, Tevita Metuisela, Shannon McDonnell

2010
Shannon Gallant, Dean Collis, John Morris, Dene Halatau, Danny Galea, Peni Tagive, Corey Payne, Rhys Hanbury, Dane Laurie

2011 ????
Taniela Tuiaki (retired), Jason Cayless (retired), Tame Tupou (retired / released)
Potentially
Bryce Gibbs, Liam Fulton. Todd Payten

I have to say WT have been pretty astute in letting go players. No real talent has slipped out of our fingers and burned WT with their loss apart from Pat Richards, Scott Prince and Brett Hodgson None of the others have either really gone on to great things as potentially shown in some performances at WT or been irreplaceable in the WT squad itself.

So looks like its kudos to Sheens and the WT club in being astute when letting players go more often than not.

What do others think?

I would add that the Tigers tried to retain Richards and Prince but were outbid, and you can probably put Laffranchi into this category as well.

The retention blunders come down to Hodgson and Harrison imo, with the fullback / goal kicker being a massive issue since Brett left, and Harrison kicking on at a club that allows him to play in his correct position, but when you weigh it up like you have, the Tigers have done well all things considered.

Criticism from me is more aimed at the coachs history of playing people out of position and persisting with players that are under performing.

From memory we also had guys like Richard Villisanti and Lewis Brown on our roster but not sure when they figured into the equation, but both kicked on the international level while not getting a start in 1st grade at the Tigers.

Bronson Harrison, had a great year last year in attack but still a massive liability in defense

Thats the type of thing I mean- many of those that went (either for more money, better opportunity or punted) still are good but have not gone on to be world beaters. Harrison is good (now that he is allowed to be a second rower) but still not someone WT can have done without as others equally as good or better have come into the squad either through recruitment eg Ellis or from lower grades eg Dwyer.

Richards and Prince leaving was unavoidable from memory- nothing WT could have done could have kept them but Hodgson remains the one that was let slip away. I agree with DanOz's thoughts on him.

Although I do not rate the loss of Matthew Head as irreplaceable I do agree whilst at WT his ability to fix our long, long capability gap in the halfback role since Prince left, was never given the opportunity by Teflon. However time and the long endurance of the fans have given WT 3 options in our current squad with Lui, Moltzen and Miller. Time wil tell if we loose any of those if WT make the wrong call.

Villasanti was gone well before Sheens arrived, left after 2000 I think. Was behind Tex, Lowrie, Skando etc I think and went to Canberra (?) before the Warriors. Would have been great to have him during that dreadful 2001-2003 period.

Lewis Brown couldn't get a gig here but has at worst turned into a solid FG back-rower / centre. Got a NZ jersey last week but they were also missing plenty of players so take that with a grain of salt. Can't say we missed out there - he would be a handy squad player but can't see him becoming a star. Wasn't he behind Farah at the time, playing hooker for BRET?

Lewis Brown is a star at the warriors, and will make the end of year kiwi touring party injuries or no injuries and is a far better player than O'Dwyer or Fulton.

But at the time he was playing hooker as I remember it and was never in front of Robbie. He's turned into a good player but surely can't say he was a loss at the time or for the next three or four seasons after either. It's like saying McDonnell is a loss because he turns out to be a good first grader in three years from now.
