Shiwen is a 16-year-old girl, and she didn't just set the record by more than a second, finishing at 4:28.43; she beat men's gold-medal winner Ryan Lochte down the stretch, finishing her final 50 meters in 28.93 to Lochte's 29.10.

I can see Billy Birmingham getting quite some mileage out her name...

Ooh, is it because she is Chinese that she is sus?

There are at least three other female swimmers out there that have won gold medals at 14.

Did you see the race? It was 400m medley and she swam her 100m freestyle leg as fast as Ryan Lochte in the men's final. My first thought when she started to pull away was that there is no way it could be legit. If it is, that's surely one of the most amazing things in Olympic swimming history.

Yep, 5-6 seconds off her PB in a matter of months. Nothing suss about that at all

There is a 15yr old Lithuanian in the 100m breaststroke who has absolutely slaughtered her best time as well - something like 3 seconds over a 65 second race...

No one seems to be questionning her... is it because she is not Chinese?

In a 4 1/2 minute race at the highest professional level?

So what?

Doing that at the highest professional level is much MUCH harder than doing it at amateur level. Pros are already somewhere near their peak and make improvements in increments rather than in huge leaps.

Look at the world record progression for the event:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_400_metres_individual_medley#Long_course_2

It took over 10 years for every swimmer in the world to improve the world mark by as much as this chick improved her own PB in a matter of months.

If she had only taken up the sport recently, then you could expect that level of improvement. But she has been swimming for years, with a long history of past results that do not show her to be capable of such an incredible time.

Did she break the world record and swim faster than her male equivilent in the last leg?

Does her country have a long history of cheating in swimming?

She is 16 years old...

Thorpe was improving his times in similar chunks at that age...

Of course the fact she is chinese makes a difference.

The chinese swimming team has proven itself incapable of winning medals except for when they were rife with drug cheats. China won more swimming gold medals on the first day of competition in London than they did at Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing combined. That to me is suspect and worthy of investigation

So Stephanie Rice wasn't suss at all for shaving two second off her PB in just a few months?

Let's be real... If Ye Shewen didn't have slanty eyes and spoke with an Australian accent you'd all be talking about how f**kin' wonderful she is.

Thorpe was also growing at a rate of inches every month during that period. His feet grew something like 4 shoe sizes in his break out year of swimming when his PBs tumbled and he smashed the 400 and 200m world records.

Also there were rumours about his abilities and he was scrutinised closely to ensure he was legit.

All their medal winners will be subject to drug testing...What other investigation do you propose?

and no one has ever been able to beat the system, have they ?

if anything does happen, she'll be back home in China celebrating before any action is taken
