Sorry to rain on your parade guys, but "Yes sir" isn't Gowies line either.

I first heard the cliche saying in the early 1980's during the US Open Golf when US commentator Bob 'Rossy' Rosberg called a downhill slider by Jack Nicklaus. As the ball got closer to the hole, Rossy was heard to boldy state the words " Maybe....maybe....YES SIR!" as the ball drapped into the front of the hole.

Gowie being a big golf fan probably plagerised the saying from Rossy.
