YOUR TOP 5 TOUGHEST PLAYERS

I got the idea from tonight's Footy Show where they were discussing with guest panelists (John Sattler, MG, Mario Fenech, David Gillespie, Danny Nutley) about their 'Top 5 Toughest Players'.

Les Davidson headed MG and Fenech's list, Baa Baa Lamb surprisingly on top of Cement's list, Nutley had Ray Price and unfortunately Satts's nomination slips my mind.

So, who are your 'Top 5 Toughest Players'?

(Preferrably that you have seen not what you have heard about)

Leave it all with ya'...I will nominate after more thought, though I can say without a shadow of a doubt, Manly's Geoff Toovey sits atop my list.

TOP 5 TOUGHEST PLAYERS

1. Geoff Toovey (Manly)
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

Cheers

In no order.

Tom Raudonikis
Geoff Toovey
Terry Lamb
Gavin Miller
Kurt Sorensen (1 player even tho I was a kid I wouldve dreaded playing against)

I used to think Stephen Knight was pretty tough too, for a three quarter, maybe it was his size more than anything, he was a giant.

i really cant pick a top 5, there are so many players that have displayed amazing feats of toughness.

one that deserves a mention that didnt come up in the footy show is David Penna. i cant remember the year exactly, somewhere around 98-99 maybe vs the sharks. he got knocked out in a tackle and went off the field, only to come back later on only to go down again. it was later found out that he came back on with a broken neck. stupidity or toughness, its a fine line. but my hats off to that bloke.

Satts first choice was Kevin Ryan

along with John Raper, Billy Smith, the pommie I cant recall, and Clive Churchill??
Maybe Clive was clive James pick, I think it was his 2nd, after norm Provan, he only chose 2.

Some players of the top of the head....

Geoff Toovey - everyone knows why.

Paul Harragon - To smash QLD and get smashed by QLD for twenty straight Origin games says it all.

Steve Simpson - Has played with some horrific injuries. Played 65 minutes with a broken jaw and fractured cheekbone last year. Played 25 minutes with a broken foot in 2004. In 2003 he played 30 minutes with a split Kidney, i can tell you it doesn't get anymore painful then that.

Shane Webcke - Similar to Simmo, has played with some bad injuries. Broken arm in 2000 final series and busted ribs in last years Origin series come to mind.

Some other memories...

Johns played the 1997 GF with broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Bowman in Origin, he had blown his knee but stayed on and threw himself at the defense.

Mark Hughes splaying 70 minutes with a broken ankle a few weeks back.

I'll think of more.

TOP 5 TOUGHEST PLAYERS
(1988-today)

1. Geoff TOOVEY (Manly) - Little Big Man, no one tougher.
2. Shane WEBCKE (Brisbane) - Plays hard and hurt. Carried one arm in finals and decider.
3. Paul HARRAGON (Newcastle) - Loved the tought stuff, thrived on it.
4. Gary JACK (Balmain) - Body on the line for his entire career.
5. Mal MENINGA (Canberra) - Broken arm after broken arm could not stop him

Notable mentions; Mark Carroll, Ian Roberts, Mark Geyer, Dean Pay, Gordan Tallis, Trevor Gillmeister, Bruce McGuire, Adrian Morley, Quentin Pongia, John Lomax, Ruben Wiki, Tawera Nikau, Stephen Kearney, Paul Bowman, David Barnhill, Adam Muir, Brad Mackay, Mick Potter, Terry Lamb, Wally Lewis, Steve Roach, David Gillespie, Simon Gillies, Mark Coyne, David Furner, Royce Simmons...arrggghhhh the list can go on and on and on.

It all comes down to one's definition of tough and I don't think there are too many wrong answers in this topic to be honest, though an uppercut to the guy on the Footy Show who nominated Hazem El Masri

My memory has failed me at this time of night and after a long day though this is what I came up with.

Just one thing quickly...I mentioned the Mal Meninga nomination to Bomber online and he said "wouldn't have thought of him straight up, but good choice"...

Mal Meninga IMO has to be a nomination. Mal suffered broken arm after broken arm yet continued to come back and play at the highest level right up until he retired.

I'm sure he won't make anybody's 'All Time Top', but I want to give mention to Luke Quigley (Knights' second string hooker). He makes a mountain of tackles, and has played through games with all manner of injuries (including a Kimmo special).

yay tooves! so glad to see him up there. he was a little gun wasnt he? also good to see ian roberts up there...kinda dispels the notion that all homosexuals are sissies you know? ;-)

not a 'tough player' as a rule, but honourable mention can go to de vere when he got his head stapled up on the field in origin a few yrs back. by the guy with the shaaaaakkkinng hand...gah! i still get shivers when i see that footage!

Croker deserves a mention, played 40 minutes against the roosters with a injury to his knee that needed a recon... why? because we had no other fit benchies left, ironically they were more healthy then him

Most wont agree but I say Brett Hodgson is the toughest player in our game today. Not a hard man but tough as nails
