ST GEORGE Illawarra has undergone its biggest boardroom shake-up in almost two decades after long-serving chairman Warren Lockwood stooddown from the position.
The Daily Telegraph has learnt Lockwood did not seek reappointment for the position during a board meeting on Sunday prior to St George Illawarra’s 26-12 victory against New Zealand.
He has been replaced by former Australian player Brian Johnston.
Despite his resignation, Lockwood will continue his association with the club by remaining on the St George Illawarra board.
Lockwood was among the longest serving chairmen at an NRL club having been appointed in 2001.
Last Tuesday he was part of a high powered meeting with rival club chairs to discuss the continued unrest surrounding Australian Rugby League Commission chief John Grant’s position.
Lockwood’s replacement, Johnston has had a decorated relationship with the Dragons first as a player and before becoming an established administrator.
He scored 61 tries from 167 matches while he also represented NSW and Australia.
Johnston transitioned into the chief executive role at St George and was the joint-venture’s inaugural boss.
He has since held several roles in the banking industry, since standing down as chief executive in 2000 because of ill-health. Peter Doust — the man who replaced Johnston midway through 2000 — is still the club’s chief executive.
While ownership talks between WIN Corporation and St George Illawarra have stalled, they remain ongoing, with the protracted negotiations potentially leading to further governance changes at the club if the deal takes place.
WIN are in talks to buy a 50 per cent stake of St George Illawarra.
The other pressing issue is who will coach the side beyond his year.
Incumbent Paul McGregor is off-contract at season’s end. The Dragons strong start to the year — winning three out of four matches — could land McGregor a contract extension.
Lockwood had also spent 22 years as the chairman of St George Leagues Clubs before he was again replaced by Johnston in 2013. Johnston remains chairman of the Leagues Club.
