ST GEORGE Illawarra has undergone its biggest boardroom shake-up in almost two decades after long-serving chairman Warren Lockwood stooddown from the position.

The Daily Telegraph has learnt Lockwood did not seek reappointment for the position during a board meeting on Sunday prior to St George Illawarra’s 26-12 victory against New Zealand.

He has been replaced by former Australian player Brian Johnston.

Despite his resignation, Lockwood will continue his association with the club by remaining on the St George Illawarra board.

Lockwood was among the longest serving chairmen at an NRL club having been appointed in 2001.

Last Tuesday he was part of a high powered meeting with rival club chairs to discuss the continued unrest surrounding Australian Rugby League Commission chief John Grant’s position.

Lockwood’s replacement, Johnston has had a decorated relationship with the Dragons first as a player and before becoming an established administrator.

He scored 61 tries from 167 matches while he also represented NSW and Australia.

Johnston transitioned into the chief executive role at St George and was the joint-venture’s inaugural boss.

He has since held several roles in the banking industry, since standing down as chief executive in 2000 because of ill-health. Peter Doust — the man who replaced Johnston midway through 2000 — is still the club’s chief executive.

While ownership talks between WIN Corporation and St George Illawarra have stalled, they remain ongoing, with the protracted negotiations potentially leading to further governance changes at the club if the deal takes place.

WIN are in talks to buy a 50 per cent stake of St George Illawarra.

The other pressing issue is who will coach the side beyond his year.

Incumbent Paul McGregor is off-contract at season’s end. The Dragons strong start to the year — winning three out of four matches — could land McGregor a contract extension.

Lockwood had also spent 22 years as the chairman of St George Leagues Clubs before he was again replaced by Johnston in 2013. Johnston remains chairman of the Leagues Club.

Will there be changes as a result of Johnston's appointment as Chair?
I would love to know his attitude towards:
New coach
Sale to WIN
Funding of the Football Club

Johnston went to my old school, so he must be alright.

I thought that an arrangement was brokered in that once his health improved, Johnston would re-assume his position from Doust.

Guess I was wrong.

Johno has a reputation as being a very successful and smart business operator. IMO this is a step in the right direction.......now get Mark Coyne on board as CEO and clear out the old relics and Used car salesmen. It's certainly time for change with new blood and new ideas.
As for the coach......hold the line!,
Do you really think Johnston can OUST DOUST?

Johnston appointment may be the 'changing of the guard' in relation to our boards view.
Possibly, a whole raft of ideas may have been proposed by the existing board with the view that first and foremost, they stood down to allow the new board to act on any said changes.

Total speculation l know but often such changes come about from replacing existing board members.
Coyne would also be a good appointment.

Sometimes, only a clear out can bring about change.
I'm on the Gold Coast so if someone locally arrange a large skip bin to the steps of HQ ............ it would be appreciated.

Undoubtedly a step in the right direction ! There does seem that change is finally coming to the Joint Venture , both on the field , the player / coach relationship and most importantly in the Boardroom .

Last year many said that the only way for the club to go from the depths of despair that we had reached , was up . Well now , it is actually happening - thank goodness .

This isnt going to lead to a dramatic change in the board and their attitude.

Johnstone was already on the board and isnt going to suddenly and dramatically change their strategy, direction and attitude.

Although i do think mark coyne for ceo makes sense. Although he is doing well in the insurance industry i believe a ceo at employers mutual which would be a lot less profile and a lotbless stress than an nrl club ceo.

FMD, the trough is simply not deep enough for these f*#king swine.

Bloody hell you come up with some rumours.
Daley's next role is as Gonzo in the Muppet show and is taking Mc Fookknuckle with him as Fozzy.
If Johnstone and Coyne get the run of the club they won't be employing clowns like Daley.

Does that mean McGregor will be carrying the water again?
Not sure he perfected it first time round. Sandboy might be his only option.
