Hayne signs with Gold Coast

How many elite athletes are waiting to sign "guest" contracts with NRL clubs who may or may not make the finals? One by my count and he's not currently an NRL registered player so how are the Titans rorting the cap?

Some people struggle with basic common sense...

It's nothing to do with the salary cap, I'm sure they have room under the cap to fit him in, after DCE shafted them.

However, for as long as I can remember, it's always been a rule to sign players by June 30, & I'm not just talking about players from other clubs.

So why now is the allowed to happen?

Anyway, good luck to the Titans, they deserve a change of fortune.

Signed with the Tits till 2018. Hayne's either going play for Fiji in the rugby world cup in 2019 or follow his next dream and open the batting for Australia in the 2019 Ashes tour in England.

The Sharks fans meltdowns about this are pretty embarrassing lol. You're in 1st ffs

We've loving it mate, when SBW finishes his All Blacks commitments, he's coming to play the semis for us.

In all seriousness, what would fans of other clubs think if we arranged this, which is now allowed?

I wouldn't care. My teams shit, I'm on the sharks bandwagon.

Wouldn't be surprised? How many in the starting line up came through the Sharks junior/reserve grades?

Anyway, I want to see if there's more to the story because it seems like Hayne truly wanted to go to Parra but they either didn't bother to attempt a deal or gave him a poor one (800k vs 1.2m is a no brainer).

As for match fitness, I think people are over exaggerating it a little, I mean surely he's been training hard because he was going to make a decision to play RL.
He would have had to have been fit to try and get into the Fiji team...
I think he'll come from the bench this week if he plays and plays a very basic game, but his speed and presence will be worth it imo.

Eels statement: Jarryd Hayne
Parramatta Eels | August 3 2016 1:32PM

Bevan Paul interim CEO Parramatta Eels said:

"The Parramatta Eels did communicate an offer to Jarryd Hayne's management in the past 48 hours.

"This offer was made after reviewing the consequences of the NRL Salary Cap decision and the importance of maintaining a strong roster for 2017 and 2018.

"While it was a substantial offer, we were advised by Jarryd's management that it was not comparable to the other proposals.

"The Club wishes Jarryd well in his future endeavours"

The following was posted on the NRL's website, and explains about the application of the 30 June registration deadline -

NRL welcomes Jarryd Hayne's return
Wed 03 Aug, 2016, 11:49am
Media Release, NRL

The NRL said today it is delighted that Jarryd Hayne has agreed to terms with the Gold Coast Titans to return to the NRL.

CEO Todd Greenberg said Jarryd is one of the biggest drawcards in rugby league and his return will give the game a huge boost in the lead up to the finals series.

"Jarryd left rugby league with our support to pursue a dream – and I have no doubt the fans will be eager to see him return," Mr Greenberg said.

"In the end it was Jarryd’s decision but we certainly wanted to see him in the NRL rather than another code.

"It was also up to Jarryd to determine which club he joined and his decision to join the Titans will undoubtedly drive interest in the NRL on the Gold Coast."

Mr Greenberg said that, under the NRL rules, players could join an NRL club after June 30 as long as they were not switching from another club. The decision required NRL approval which was given in this case in the best interests of the game.

So there we have it.

If that's the rule regarding the June 30 deadline then fair enough (as long as the cap situation is also fine - and as it's the Titans in questions, it most certainly is) - but it should change for the future. Can't have the potential for a signing to come in for the finals etc.. it's very unlikely, but if you leave the window open... well, there's a good reason most sporting leagues have general signing/registration deadlines at the start of or at some point during a season.

That said, the NRL can decline to register contracts on a discretionary basis so if they felt a team was actively trying to take advantage for the finals etc in a really cynical way, they could just say no.

If I were a Warriors supporter I'd be hoping he plays. He can't possibly be match fit let alone part of a cohesive team unit...not that he's really a team player anyway.

Hayne is still a potential game breaker, and likely going to be at least around a similar level compared to any other fullback the Titans could put out there (and strengthens their three quarter line by moving that player - Mead? Hoffman? - out of the fullback role). That said, I'm more disappointed (which is still not much) that Peats is back. More interested in my team actually performing well..

“I waited as long as I could,” said Hayne, who claimed that part of the Titans’ appeal was that the club is not a traditional rival of the Eels.

“I’ve been back from Fiji for over a month now and eveery week I’d ask my manager, ‘What’s Parra doing, where’s Parra’s offer?’

“There was nothing on the table. I know there was speculation last night that they’d come out and tabled an offer but none of that got brought to me formally.

"How can you go back when you haven't got an offer on the table?"

Which one is lying. If he just admitted that he took the best offer available he would probably earn less ire from Parra fans. Right now he's just insulting them.

One thing i hope the Tits dont do is make him captain...

They will be tempted, but it would be unnecessary in terms of Hayne-hype and would devalue the position in the longer run ("forget the guy that toils away, let's give the C to the guy wearing glitter")

Good player but massively over-hyped...

Which is exactly what the GC need...

They already have a good team, they just need some hype and attention. Hayne may end up no more than a show-pony and still be worth it.
