I don't think letting him go was the mistake. Arthur mentioned other players who left afterwards, implying the mistake was not getting rid of them sooner (or bringing them to the club in the first place).

At the time Peats was released he had to go. Because salary cap.

Bringing Foran to the club, not releasing Junior earlier and releasing Peats were all mistakes

Seems like Arthur wants a Head of Football (or whatever it's called) that answers to him ("Go and sign this player, merkin.") Seems fair enough to me, and explains why candidates might balk at the offer.

Yep definitely...
I don't think Smithy has ever reported to a head coach since he started his first grade coaches career

Only in hindsight. That's how risk management works. Plenty of merkins thought releasing Paulo at all (or not matching Canberra's offer beyond this year) were mistakes as well. If he plays well today they'll come out of the woodwork.

Most mistakes are realised in hindsight. Those that are good at risk management have far less mistakes in hindsight.

Agreed and I think this is the only thing that BA has struggled with. His risk analysis and decision making based on this can certainly be improved. For every good Scott/Guth type decision, there have been more Watmough & Foran signings/Peats release/Jo Paulo resigning before releasing/Matto resigning before releasing type decisions.

Before everyone jumps down my throat, I still believe BA is a very good coach and we're lucky to have him.

Well I'm sure we have made less mistakes in hindsight than if we were poor at risk management. But like some merkin said in a different thread, when you're at the bottom you gain nothing by taking small risks.

That's an assumption based on no evidence whatsoever.

PARRAMATTA have abandoned plans to immediately appoint a head of football until they can find the right candidate for the $250,000-a-year position.

Eels management will turn their focus to filling the vacant chief executive role and the head of commercial position.

Several candidates have been linked to the head of football position, including Tim Sheens, Peter Parr and former coach Brian Smith.

The Eels, though, haven’t found their man and are refusing to rush into making a choice. The club will now sit back and wait until the correct candidate emerges.

Smith actually approached the club and was granted an interview given he had served for 10 years as head coach.

Parramatta are adamant Smith was never offered the position and, once he knew he wouldn’t be considered, he withdrew.

“No offers of employment have been made for the head of football position,” interim Parramatta CEO Bevan Paul said.

“In the meantime, the Eels are getting on with business and continuing to re-sign players and our coach, Brad Arthur, is continuing to reorganise his coaching infrastructure for 2017.”

Smith coached Parramatta between 1997 and 2006 — failing to win a title despite presiding over some star-studded sides.

Arthur is currently restructuring his football department to ensure he has the adequate resources to become a force again in 2017.

Parramatta inquired about former Canberra, North Queensland, Wests Tigers and Australian coach Sheens, more so to discover his short-term and long-term plans.

Eels officials did speak with Parr but no offer was tabled and he is expected to remain football manager with the North Queensland Cowboys.

Highly regarded Cronulla recruitment manager Phil Moss has also been strongly linked to the role, however some influential figures inside the Eels’ camp that don’t want Moss back at the club.

Former Parramatta head of football Daniel Anderson was deregistered by the NRL over the recent salary cap scandal. The spot has remained empty since.

Eels management have committed to supporting Arthur’s restructure. It is understood interviews for the CEO and head of commercial positions will start this week.

Parramatta Eels sponsor Dyldam more than $500,000 in arrears in payments

Parramatta are on a collision course with their major sponsor after Dyldam allegedly fell more than half a million dollars in arrears in its scheduled payments.

The Eels and Dyldam are likely to part company at the end of the season regardless of whether the property development and construction group meets a payment plan outlined by the club.

Dyldam has been a corporate supporter of the Eels since 1998, with the company taking up the jersey sleeve sponsorship five years ago. They have enjoyed naming rights honours and the pride of place on the Eels jersey in recent years, but officials have become frustrated by their inability to meet their financial obligations in a timely fashion.

A source close to the matter said: "They always pay, but they're always late."

Parramatta have endured the most tumultuous season in the club's history following a series of dramas including the salary cap scandal, troubled former skipper Kieran Foran's departure with three years remaining on his contract, the Corey Norman drugs saga and the Semi Radradra domestic violence allegations, to name a few.

It's understood Dyldam had attempted to negotiate a reduction of its promised payments based on reputational damage to their brand via its association with the Eels. However, the club is adamant it is entitled to the full amount agreed upon.

Former Parramatta powerbrokers had tolerated Dyldam's tardiness because they feared they had few other corporate alternatives available to them. However, temporary administrator Max Donnelly, parachuted in with an edict to get the blue and golds on track on and off the field, won't tolerate financial commitments not being met.

The Eels believe their brand is worth a seven-figure amount next season after shedding the officials deemed responsible for overseeing the systematic rorting of the salary cap. It's unlikely Dyldam will be able to agree to such a commitment, and other corporates are being lined up with a view to filling the void.
