South Sydney’s Blockbusting second rower Dave ‘Coal Train’ Taylor says that being part of the victorious Queensland State of Origin campaign was a priceless experience and he will bring that confidence back to the Rabbitohs camp over the next three months.
Taylor also says he will be looking to help lift the performance of the red and green army to take them into their second semi-finals appearance in over 20 years.
Speaking ahead of the massive clash with the table-topping St George Illawarra Dragons this Friday night, Taylor says that the experience of Origin Football will benefit both him and the Rabbitohs.
“It was an unbelievable experience,” Taylor summarised.
“Just being around the boys and having that sort of success is something that’s pretty hard to explain.
“I’ll definitely be able to bring that experience back to Souths with me.
“Just being around the boys who are just so professional week-in and week-out like the Lockyers, Civoniceva and Johnathan Thurston opens your eyes as to how they train and you can come back here and try and put it on to other people, let it rub off on them.”
Taylor says the Rabbitohs need to find another gear to be true contenders and it all starts this Friday night.
“They (St George Illawarra) will do what they do every week,” he says.
“They’ll come out and play consistent football for the 80 minutes and try not to let any mistakes creep into their game.
“That’s what we have to do as well, just play football for the 80 minutes, not 50 or 60.”
Taylor has operated under the tutelage of Dragons coach Wayne Bennett in his previous life as a Brisbane Bronco. Taylor knows the mind set that Bennett will have the Dragons in for this important clash.
“He’s got a simple game plan, Wayne, which is just to get the job done and make as little mistakes as possible,” Taylor explained.
“That’s what they’ve been doing and it’s been working for them.”
Taylor says the Rabbitohs need to ramp it up over the next eight weeks to ensure a positive run into the finals.
“This next eight weeks is going to be crucial for our chances in the semis so we need to step it up a level,” said the hulking forward.
“A lot of the football we’re playing at the moment is like semi-final football so we’ve got to step up a little bit and start playing some really good football.”
Taylor says the support of the Members and supporters is vital this Friday night.
“It’s always great to play in front of a big crowd, especially when you’re playing at home and you know that everyone is cheering for South Sydney,” Taylor said.
“It’s great fun playing in front of a big crowd and it makes such a difference when you’re out on the field, so hopefully all of our members come to this game and show the whole NRL who has the best supporters in the competition.”
