Dragons Re-Sign More Junior Rep Grand Finalists
Thu 1st September, 12:00PM
A A

The St George Illawarra Dragons have announced the re-signing of several further members from their Illawarra Steelers SG Ball Grand Final squad to new contracts.

Steelers prop Josh Dowel has agreed to a further two seasons and will remain at the Club, until at least the end of 2018.

The local Warrilla Gorillas junior most recently represented the NSW Combined High Schools U18 team that competed in the National Schoolboy Titles in July.

Additionally, Steelers winger Dylan Morris has been signed for a further season, until at least the end of 2017.

The local Kiama Knights junior, alongside Dowel, will join the Dragons' National Youth Competition team squad next season.

"It is great news to be able to announce the re-signing of a further two members of the fantastic Illawarra Steelers' SG Ball SG Ball Grand Final," said Director of Rugby League Pathways Ian Millward.

"Dylan is a player who has great speed and acceleration and has proven to be a prolific try-scorer so far during his time in the Junior Representatives.

"Josh is another local junior who has been in our systems for several years now and is very enthusiastic about continuing his development here at the Club."

Furthermore, Dragons NYC team duo Joe Lovodua and Israel Seufale have both agreed to a further two seasons, also until at least the end of 2018.

Lovodua is a local Kogarah Cougars junior who can play in the halves and was a graduate of the St George Dragons SG Ball team in 2015.

Moreover, Seufale is a Cabramatta Two Blues junior in the midst of his first season in the NYC after being elevated from the Dragons SG Ball team earlier this year.

"Joe and Israel are two exciting young players who were previously part of our St George Dragons SG Ball team at different stages of their career," said Millward.

"Both players have successfully made the step-up to our NYC squad and we look forward to seeing them continue representing the Dragons."

Lovodua has played a game or two in the under 20's as a dummy half which really isn't fair on his as he is naturally a 5/8.

Has the potential to be a good player but at this stage its hard to tell.

Seufale is another guy who can play half has also played off the bench in the under 20's this year but has played on the wing in the Illawarra comp in firsts and reserve grade. In actual fact has been named at centre for Helensburgh in the GF this weekend.

Sailor is quick and has an array of talent and should be in the under 20's next year.

The under 20's squad is going to be choc full of really good youngsters.

Well, got to say Millward has come up in my expectations and this and the other interview revealed some good stuff. Mind you it is a response to all the criticism of our retention & recruitment over the past couple of years but at least they are telling us what's going on.

Had to laugh at the pathways structure of identifying positions for future NRL players as it only works if the dopey NRL coach gives them a go and that hasn't been evident . This must frustrate the hell out of Millward & Co.

Do you somethings think that Mary is offside with all the staff at the club ?

Denis you could be onto something.

Interesting that Haran is in charge of senior signings yet it makes you wonder how much control does he really have.

Wawrick is the guy who will sign the youngsters and being able to keep Zac Lomax, Reece Robson and quite a few others is great to see.

Bringing Steve Marsters, Patty Herbert and Josh Tua from NZ shows they are willing to venture further a field to sign good prospects.

Josh Kerr imo is a good signing with an upside on his potential and the decision not to keep Quinlan and bring Dufty further into the frame means they are actually thinking about the future.

Nene McDonald imo is an excellent addition.

Noticed Millward talked about Steve Masters as the up & coming to replace Dugan
Probably why he originally told Dufty to look elsewhere. Sounds like he has a huge opinion of him

Dufty is well and truly in the mix.

Will possibly be top try scorer in the under 20's and that doesn't include the ones he sets up.

Marsters is a big boy for a fullback and has a great skill set but is still some time away before he is ready.

We are good at signing our juniors when they are still juniors. It is when they become or are about to become first graders that we struggle to retain even those we want. I hope that changes.

Yeah thanks.
Say what you will about the quality or importance of the signings announced, it seems the club is responding to fans calls for better communication on recruitment and retention.
It seems to be a clear change in recruitment strategy imo from going after higher profile players externally, and being repeatedly unsuccessful, to investing in our younger development players and considering their pathway to FG. Hopefully it pays off

Millward specifically said in another recruitment vid this week that Quinlan was let go so that Duffy could shadow Dugan next year.
