The Fiji National Rugby League in New Zealand will see young Fijian players in NZ field three teams for the 2009 Pacific Island Rugby League Association (PIRLA) tournament. The tournament will be held next weekend at Auckland's Cornwall Park.
FNRL chairman of selector and NZ selector, Steven Smith said Fiji would field three teams in this year's tournament - Under 9, Under 12 and Under 14.
“The tournament will see our Pacific Nations battle for Rugby League supremacy in their various age groups,” Smith said.
“The teams have been preparing well over the last three to four weeks and the boys are looking forward to playing in the two-day tournament.”
This year the Fiji National Rugby League (NZ) Association is pleased to see the number of Fijian boys making themselves available for the tournament.
The national selector yesterday urged the Fijian community to support their teams at the two day tournament. Smith has also praise the selection of NZ based Meli Koliavu into the Bati team that will travel to PNG on today.
Koliavu is the lone NZ player in the Vodafone Bati side for the pacific Cup. They would play games against Samoa or the Cook Islands, Tonga or Papua New Guinea.
“I am pleased to see one of our New Zealand based players (Meli Koliavu) selected in the squad and will make is debut for the Bati at the Pacific Cup,” he said.
The FNRL (NZ) Association also wished the Vodafone Fiji Bati well in their bid to win the Pacific Cup.
