THE NRL’s pay war is expected to drag on for a few more weeks after chief executive Todd Greenberg unable to convince the Rugby League Players Association to accept a new deal when the two parties met on Friday, placing the $9.4 million salary cap in jeopardy.

Despite receiving unanimous backing from clubs on Thursday, the RLPA refused to sign off on a new collective bargaining agreement on Friday, claiming the two parties remain “apart on many key financial and non-financial aspects of the agreement.”

The RLPA anticipated a resolution was now weeks away.

Greenberg met with RLPA boss Ian Prendergast for an hour on Friday but a deal was unable to be struck.

The RLPA board will meet this weekend before players are updated at a mass meeting on Monday.

Did we really think rlpa was going to sign off one day after the clubs?

Surely ian P would have said thanks for offer we will table this to our members over the next 3 days and come back to you on Monday

Makes Todd look weak. A good CEO gets shit done, months prior to yesterday's agreement with the clubs

That's not what they've said, they've turned it down, they won't be taking it to their members for a vote.

maybe someone should so them an Australia wide wage growth graph at the meeting..

Not many industries are getting a 48% increase in 5 years..

I am finding it a little difficult to "feel the pain" of the players here.

As I have said before, what is their proposed remedy when one of their "brothers" f*cks up royally and reduces the value of the game?

They are all for the concept of sharing in the games income generation, but are happy to carry on like dickheads and lessen the value of the game too.

Stop being wankers and take the $9.4 million.

This is about the bloke in charge of the RLPA and his pals getting into a pissing contest now.

He is weak. Shows no initiative and sweet f**k all gets done as a result. He's done a much worse job than Smith did but will get a free pass because Rugby League's pathetic News Limited employed Journalists give him a free pass like they did with Gallop.

Spot on.

Slimy Todd gets a pass from News Ltd despite actually being worse that the bloke he got the gig from.

It is a dumb idea though, from Mascord. On one hand he is saying they are not being strategic like Arko and Quayle with expansion to new areas, and then the next he wants market forces to decide the long term design of Sydney teams. Imagine if you lost Penrith, Parramatta, Manly Cronulla and StG-Ill? And were left with Tigers, Souths, Sydney City, Bulldogs. Relocation is fine, and I support a funded model to do that if a club decides that. Merging really isn't much better than folding IMO. Lets be honest, St George was more of a takeover and Wests/Balmain and Manly/Norths didn't/don't work.

The reason an arms race is a bad idea isn't just that it thins clubs, it thins the cash and assets of all clubs. It pushes the money to the players entirely like the super league war period, and the game doesn't recover from it. Those cash supplies don't ever come back to the game, and revenue across the board probably falls. There are less interesting games, and TV ratings fall as well. Who wants to turn up to see your side pummeled by a rep side?

Crowds are terrible across Sydney. Wollongong is averaging better than both SFS and Stadium Australia.... And the big stadiums are not drawing much better than a lot of suburban grounds. And this is the future plan? If you insist on playing large venues, make double headers more frequently against local sides. If you want to go down the path of a criteria, than you also have to make game time zones even. Some teams draw terrible times that work for TV, but not the average family. It is incredibly unfair to expect a side with a crap draw, to actually get bums on seats. The early Friday time is impossible to fill, for example.

The NRL needs to peg wage growth with the RLPA to a % of revenue. When they threaten industrial action, than wages may fall the next year. It keeps them in line and promoting the game, rather than dragging it along trying to hold out for more money.

Very well said. My thoughts exactly.

This could turn ugly for the RLPA if the players want even more than is on the table.

Take the 9.4. It's a no brainer for a game that has real trouble, for whatever reason, drawing a decent cowd to many weekly fixtures.

What irks me is everyone saying "but these guys only have a short career to make their money". Make the f**kwits do 12 months in the army, a job where you have actual life threatening danger (whilst deployed), your body cops punishment all the time and it takes 10 years to make what some of these wankers make in 1 year.

Mascord:
"But every fan that competitive parity is going to bring us is already on board. And a wider footprint is going to bring us more fans – even if that means sacrificing parity for a few years."

Delusional. You'll lose more fans relocating a Sydney club than you'll gain.

Look Greenberg has had his many downsides, but to get the clubs and NRL to actually agree on something like the Cap ATM ,is in itself a bleeding miracle.
Prendergast was never going to agree with anything up front, even if he was given the keys to Fort Knox.
Prendergast stated things only started to really move when Greenberg came on board, according to the Herald.
The $400,000 integrity money was dumped, even if a player did a dump.48% pay increase.
And not sending clubs./game broke by pushing for $10m.

He has to appear a tough negotiator ,to justify his CEO of the RLPA existence. How many wage issues have been resolved in a flash. From what I gather ,its things like insurance, personal issues that need to be addressed .That's why they are going to the players on Monday.

If the players get too flipping greedy ,they lose more fans than they gain.
Hell they've hardly been dragging fans screaming through the gates of late.
If they strike ,it'll make the SL seem OK,and that's saying something.
